Well lads, i just said id share my experience with the new diet i have been giving my dogs for the last few weeks and im seeing such results with it i said id write up a piece about it. Basically there are two diets i looked into and you have to pick the one that best suits what you can get your hands on. There is the BARF diet (BONE AND RAW FOOD) - 50% raw meats and 50% raw meaty bones and some puréed veg. or the SARF diet (SPECIES APPROPRIATE RAW FOOD) this is the diet i have my dogs on. Basically 80% raw meats and 20% raw meaty bones and no veg.

I could go onto the facts about this for pages but best thing to do is Google them and see which one suits you. I have gone from feeding my dogs dry nuts and cleaning up messy dog kennels and watching them drink heaps of water, so seeing them drink tiny amounts of water now as they don't need it because they such nutritional value from their food, minimal dog droppings in the kennel, clean teeth, perfect looking coats, more energised and and so eager to eat their dinner they are literally gone in seconds in and this is in just a few weeks. You will need a freezer for the dog and a little bit of patience to organise their dinners.

I have a springer pup and a 3 year old springer bitch, i feed them the same ammounts once a day though. They main staple of the diet i give them is raw green tripe. This is by far the best food you could ever give a dog and you will see how much they like it. I buy it in frozen 9lb bags from the local knackery and it costs €3 a bag. I thaw these out the night before and bag them in roughly 500gr bags (a butchers handful) and re freeze them. I also give them up and down as a break from the tripe, raw mince from the knackery from freshly fallen animals (also €3 for 9lb).

The other part of the diet is the meaty bones, a good butcher will keep you going with a few bones, i have a fresh supply a raw chicken wing so im very lucky so two of them each a day does the dogs. thats works out about 700gr of raw food a day, the bones in the wings keep the teeth really clean and the muching on the bones keeps the jaw muscles srtong. I also throw them two big raw bones a week just to keep them busy for an hour or two. A raw egg once a week is no harm and neither is a tablespoon of olive oil once a week and a table spoon of apple cider vinegar does no harm either.  This diet mimics everything a dog or wolf or fox in the wild would eat, it means less trips to the vets , your dogs are healthier and live longer and all for about €20 a month and a bit of effort. Dont forget that what you are giving them is everything that is in dog food, only totally natural and not processed.

Also their is no grain which is in nuts. They reckon dogs are actually allergic to grain and i have noticed my 3 year old bitch scratching up and down for years and his behaviour has stopped since the grain has left the diet. Do a bit of online research I also have a chapter from a book sent to me from a lad in the UK who put me onto this diet for the dogs and he keeps and fairly tight kennel of Labradors for picking up on shoots, so i trust him. He feeds mostly chicken carcasses to his dogs, but that suits him. Pm me if your interested. NOTE - to buy meats from the knackery you will need a department of agriculture license to buy it.Its free to apply for.__________________ FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER - Cooltederry Gundogs
