Paulaner: What beer did I drink?

I was at oktoberfest in the mansion house last week and was drinking a fantastic beer which I though was Paulaner (said it on the glass). But I've since found out that Paulaner is a brewery and makes different beers. Wondering how I can find out what it was I was drinking? It was real easy to drink and have to say I loved it.

I can upload a pic of the glass of beer I drank if that helps!

Was it Paulander Octoberfest by any chance? They all tend to brew a session beer for the octoberfest.

I was at the one in Cork and it was the Paulaner Oktoberfest Brew (more golden in colour) and the Paulaner Weiss-Bier (more towards a brown and cloudier) that were being served

Yeah it was Paulaner Octoberfest and it was the golden coloured beer with a real frothy head.

I'm guessing I can't get this anywhere else?

you guess wrong - you should be able get it (by the bottle) in any decent off-licence fro the next month or so.

if you see a Spaten Oktoberfest or Löwenbräu Oktoberfest you'll probably enjoy them too.
They are also brewed in Munich and tend to be reasonably widely available in Ireland as they are now part of the Uni-Bev (or whatever its called) conglomerate.

drinkstore.ie has a small octoberfest beer selection if you want to get in your supply by post!

AB-InBev. Heineken Ireland aren't exactly behind the door in distributing the Paulaner Oktoberfest either, and there's also an Irish distributor for the Hofbräu one.

Paulaner Ocktoberfest is on tap at the Bull and Castle in Christchurch.

Did they not have Salvator there as well?

I wouldn't be expecting to get Paulaner Oktoberfest by the bottle readily in Ireland this year. Last year you couldn't get it and this year looks like the same thing will happen.

There's a few more brands floating around out there this year though so high chance you local pub/offie will be doing a promo on it.

I like Erdinger Oktoberfest(see my Sig, I kinda have to and it's nice as well) but drank Fischers at Georges Dock, IFSC, the other night.

I must knock over a case of Erdinger on my way home this week(accident of course). :D

Superquinn have it on special. I've seen a couple of pubs with it on draught.

IMHO passing off a weizen as an Oktoberfestbier is cheating. It's very different from the Oktoberfest lagers.

I'd recommend anyone to try the Eight Degrees Ochtoberfest that's knocking around the better beer pubs at the moment: beating the Germans at their own game.

They have the Paulaner Oktoberfest in Tesco, in the 5 for 10 range!! Picked one up yesterday, verry nice, kinda hoppy!
Also was in Obriens and they had it along with a couple of others, the Erdinger Oktoberfest was there!

Haven't seen it yet. Must pick up a bottle of Paulaner to try it.

Erdinger: In Germany they call it Festival Beer but for export they call it Oktoberfest. Makes sense as most companies use the commonly recognisable Oktoberfest name, including Samuel Adams who have one as well.

Must try the 8 Degrees. ;)

For sure weizen is very different to lager, but I don't think it's fair to say it's cheating. Most of the volksfest will have a selection of beers - helles, dunkel, wisse. All of these will be a special brew for the festival. I know for sure there's a franziskanner brew available at the dachau volksfest (albeit at their smaller tent). And the main tent there offers helles or dunkles which are special volksfest brews.
In short, the Oktoberfest isn't restricted to helles so the Oktoberfest label isn't strictly reserved to lagers.

On the other hand, Oktoberfestbier is a legally protected designation, and (in Europe) may only refer to the märzen-ish lagers of the Big Six Munich brands. "Erdinger Volksfest" or "Erdinger Festbier" wouldn't stick out as odd in the same way as Erdinger Oktoberfest does next to Paulaner, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu etc Oktoberfestbier on an Irish shelf.

True enough I suppose. I always just see it as festbier really myself. Never went to the actual Oktoberfest - never wanted to. All a bit too "touristy".

Got myself 6 bottles of Paulaner Oktoberfest brew in Superquinn today for €12 - you get a free tankard too :)

They had the cloudy one aswell. Can't wait to crack open one tonight!
