I have no idea how much a timing belt and labour usually costs, how much are ya saving? I've a Diesel Altea, needs a timing belt so I'm trying to figure out where's best to get it done - Main Dealer or a Mechanic I know??

On a side topic, do you know anything about replacing Dual Mass Flywheels? Need one of those changed aswell in the same car

Mmmmm could one just live with the vibration on the clutch pedal and the mad noise from the engine without it doing any damage to the car???

Might ask Santa for a new DMF!

Mines not due for 20k, tempting to get it done early at the price.

I booked in my Seat Altea XL 1.9 TDI for a timing belt and have been quoted €385 and not the €331 on the website! Something to do with my engine type! Must actually read the T&C's.

Can I ask where you saw that?

Mrs. Yamanoto's Golf is due one.

Edit: Found one - Figure tallies with George's post below.
What will we do on the day?

    • Strip down the relevant components of the engine and renew the timing belt, tensioner, water pump and coolant

    • Reassemble, road test and record the work in your Volkswagen Service Book

    • Wash and Vacuum your car

VW are doing them for €359 I believe.

It is still possible to get it done cheaper by an indy.

Yeah, it's a bit of a jump in price though, I wonder is it the price of the water pump or something included? If you're looking to get it done you should ring the garage and price it, garages maybe different. I'm going with one in Dublin.

How much would an independent do it?

As a former Skoda service manager i can tell you all that any Volkswagen group retailer can buy these timing belts from Volkswagen for 98euros so there still charging over 250euro for labour
Still a good deal though considering its a main dealer repair
