Any one know where I can get an overdrive for a Volvo 1800 rebuilt/repaired?

Cork first choice, but after that Ireland.

    thanks

There is a guy called David Byrne in Ballinaboola outside NewRoss in Wexford that builds gearboxes for a lot of maindealers and rally/race cars. He is very good and should be in the phonebook or try asking here http://www.facebook.com/wexford.motor?ref=ts for a number.

What is the actual problem with the overdrive? I own and have done a lot of work with the 1800S Volvos so might be able to help

The clutch and gearbox have been replaced, when the gearbox was finished, the car wouldnt go into overdrive.

There is a plunger on the face of the overdrive that is supposed to move up and down freely. The problem now is that it goes down, but does not come back up freely, as if there is a nick or some dirt in there.

Are you referring to the solenoid? also what type of oil is in the gearbox?

Is it a Laycock type J unit?

If so, how to strip and rebuild one - http://www.buckeyetriumphs.org/technical/jod/JOD1/JOD1.htm

I had a GKN Type R (same as but electronically switched) on my 110 for a while but it's gathering dust in the shed as it it isn't up the torque of a Land Rover!

Sorry for the late reply, firstly I would check the oil and renew it along with cleaning out the filter as oil pressure is critical. Secondly the operating valve that is actuated by the solenoid might need adjusting assuming that the solenoid engages. Follow this link for the factory workshop manual.

Good for him - overdrives aren't that easy to refurb. Glad you got sorted. I'll bear him in mind for my M41 which is jumping out of 3rd.
