    52-year-old shows how it's done

    19 September 2012

Kildare's Liam Miley collides with Anthony Rainbow during his playing days with the Lily White seniors
A Kildare club footballer has won his first championship medal at 52.

Not only did Liam Miley line out for St Laurence's in the Reserve C final against Sarsfields last weekend, but the corner forward kicked five points including the match winner.

In what is a remarkable achievement, the 52-year-old who line out in the 1982 senior football championship final against last weekend's opponents.

Another twist to the tale is that Miley lined up against the late Christy Sweeney in the '82 decider, while last Saturday he faced up against the late Christy's son, Cian.

St Laurence's won the game by a solitary point, 1-12 to 1-11 and the former county player had the final say in what was an outstanding performance.

Some going to play at 52 at any level

We had a fella like this on our junior hurling team. Wouldn't retire and because of his past reputation and status in the club he ended up playing more than he should have and hurled into his late forties. Alot of lads on the sideline weren't too happy.

Another lad on the club football team was player/ manager at the age of 44. Still picked himself when he clearly wasn't up to it.

Personally I think this is a joke.

Why is it a joke he scored 5 points one of which was the winning point, fair enough if he was unable to keep up with the game but by all accounts he played better then some of the lads half his age.
Fair ****s to him to be still playing at that age.

There's a hurling club in Dublin that has a lad who is 60+ in goals for their 2nd or 3rd team
