You can connect NTFS hard drives to the ASUS and ACER models (I've tested both) which retail around 350-400. I imagine you should be able to do so on the Samsung 10.1 as well which is in the same price bracket but I haven't tested this one myself. For you rprice range there should be an Archos/Arnova model running ICS out there (check the forum for other posts on these) but you'll need to ask owners if they are able to mount external HDDs.

If you want the latest software, be sure to get a tablet with cyanogenmod support.

I'm not even sure the A200 will have ICS on it, at least not officially.

There is a custom mod for that model with JB though.

The Acer A110, due early next month, has JB and a quad core processor for 200 euros but is only 7 inches. The 10 inch models are €360-450 (screen resolution is the only real difference between them) and come with ICS with JB to follow soon.

If 7 inches is big enough, the obvious candidate there is the Google Nexus as it has been released already with JB, is affordable and has a huge community following. I don't know if it takes external NTFS HDDs but someone can surely confirm.

I guess il just keep looking into them for a good while yet before i rush into anything

    A question
What is mini hdmi and usb??

Will mini hdmi go into one of my regular hdmi slots in my lcd??

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,738 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

You just need a miniHDMI to HDMI cable to connect it to your TV or monitor.
Mini USB isn't used much, most devices have a microUSB connector which doubles a charging port and for connecting USB devices using what's called an OTG cable

If money is not an issue and you want a top notch 10" tablet the only two I'd consider right now are the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. Both are top of the line with the Infinity having a full HD screen and optional keyboard dock (with battery) and the Note with its pressure sensitive Stylus. Both will receive JB before the end of the year which will make them even snappier.

If you're looking for a more budget option then the Asus Transformer TF300 at around €380 or Sony have their new Xperia S tablet at €400 but I don't know much about that one.

The rumour mill is buzzing with Samsung supposedly working on a 10" with HD screen 'codenamed' the P10 and there are also rumours Google are working on a 10" tablet to sell alongside the Nexus 7.
In tech if you're willing to wait there'll always be something new around the corner and you'll end up never buying so it's really your call. MS Surface is on the way too but I'd be very wary of becoming an early adopter!

2 things to be wary about when buying an Infinity from the US.

First there's customs, if your delivery is picked up by customs you'll be stung with import duty which would negate any potential savings.

Secondly Asus don't have a great Quality Control record, quite a few tablets had to be returned for many different issues - loose screen, light bleed etc. If you buy one off Ebay you won't have any return policy like you would with a store and you'll have to get Asus to repair your tablet.

Komplett have the one of the cheapest prices in Europe at the moment for a 64GB with keyboard dock at €679. It is quite a high price but there are very few 32GBs available anywhere and even fewer without the bundled keyboard dock so choice is limited.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

You just need a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable to connect it to your TV or monitor
Or a micro-HDMI to HDMI adapter...

Whatever tablet you get, check whether you need a mini-HDMI or a micro-HDMI adapter or cable. There is a difference, as I found out. :o

Asus TFT300T Transformer Tablet - Blue.

Iv been looking into this one for 500euro in dublin

is this good a good price or is there anywhere thats doing cheaper?

this one does support NTFS yea?
    is it upgradable??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 258 ✭✭Pop'n'Fresh

Not sure what you mean by "upgradable" there's a micro SD card slot in the tablet and a full sized SD card slot in the dock. There's also a USB 2.0 port in the dock and it does support NTFS and FAT32.

You can get it for €470 on Komplett.ie but they sell it with the "international" keyboard layout which is essentially a US keyboard. If you want the UK/Ireland keyboard you'll have to pay €500 from PCWorld or Argos.

Jellybean is already released for this tablet though it's going through some teething problems. I haven't been following the details of it very closely so could be "smooth as butter" by now ;)
As far as budget tablets go I've ready very very few complaints about this one, the vast majority of owners seem pleased with their purchase.

Yep Nexus 7 is a great budget 7" tablet, but the OP said he wanted to transfer his music and movies using USB to his tablet - this isn't straight forward plug & play using the Nexus7's micro USB port. If you want USB host for mass storage devices you'll have to root the Nexus 7 and install a mass storage utility.
Check XDA Developers forum for lots of guides and tutorials on how to do this - not very hard with the right help :)

I've bought a €4000 Samsung TV, my Asus transformer pad Infinity and a Dell 24" monitor from Komplett.ie. Their warehouse is in Netherlands and have a depot in Dublin, from my experience delivery takes about a week. 100% genuine and reliable but for some reason I couldn't order using my Visa Debit, I was forced to use my credit card.

They also have a subforum on boards.ie if you have any questions or customer care queries.

its the same without the dock but it does not mention anything about USB how come?

There's no USB port on the tablet itself, it's on the dock. If you don't intend to buy the keyboard dock (which also has an extra battery) you can buy an adapter for €20-30 that will plug in to the docking port on the tablet and give you your USB port.

internet browsing+ youtube is what Id be mainly using it for anyways

does anyone here have a samsung galaxy tab2 what do you think of the browseing on it?

the only downside is the NTFS thing but im considering leting this slide

I've only tested them for about 5 minutes each but I couldn't tell the difference. Although, it's possible that Chrome won't work at all on the Asus if that's your preferred browser. The screen is really bright on the Samsung, I found. It might be Super IPS+ which you get with the Prime/Infinity but not the TF300. Don't quote me on that though, it was just an impression I got. I was close to buying the Samsung but the laggy default launcher put me off a bit.

I bought the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" from Argos for €250 and I must say I love it! The screen size is perfect. Small enough to hold in one hand yet large enough to watch videos and read comfortably. Browsing is great, no problems at all .

    Very happy with my purchase.

Check out the new Acer Iconia A110 7" tablet (note not the older a100).

Quad core and similar to the Nexus 7. However it also has an sd card slot and hdmi out. Very interesting 7" tablet for around £180 (sterling).

Amazon says that it's covered by a "1-Year ASUS Global Warranty", so it should be covered from Ireland?

Not sure whether to chance it or not. He can check it out when it's delivered to the hotel, but if there's a problem with it he won't have time to organise a return. €400 is my absolute limit for a tablet.

Yes thats the one. It has highly accurate GPS positioning, it actually says my exact street address on the map. You can use it as a satnav.

Yep it would be covered by Asus' WW policy but it's supposedly a pain in the rear end to get a tablet repaired. Granted most of the complaints come from the US so their European facilities may be easier. If there's an obvious issue at least with a store you have a 14-30 day return window.

I had to return my first but my second is practically flawless (some lightbleed on the boot screen but doesn't bother me). JellyBean was a huge improvement for the tablet and made it much faster and smoother.

Your friend could try a local bestbuy store and open the box while in store to check for any obvious problems before buying. If I were you I'd be more comfortable with that than an Amazon purchase.

Good luck with whatever you decide. It's a great tablet. Enjoy :)

Thanks. I'll have to chance Amazon as he'll have no time to go to any shops while he's there. I had a look at their (Asus) UK/Ireland support page and it looks reasonably straightforward to request an RMA number for any problems.

    Fingers crossed................
