    Hi all,

Would be grateful for some advive,

currently doing up a cv for teaching job and have a query re layout.

    Should I

    1. List all my previous experience (ie school, dates, subjects) and then underneath that, list all the key duties, specific extra curricular exp etc gained across all of the above experience or

    2. List one school and uderneath that put specific duties etc, then list next school and repeat

I hope im making sense!!! I just think option t2o above is repetitive as id be listing alot of the same bullet points over and over (even with rewording!)

What do people recommend or has anybody got a suggested layout, would REALLy appreciate any advice / help
    Thank :)

    Use the standard application form

If its Primary, just go Mainstream Resource or Learning Support. Any additional duties would be mentioned down at the end

If you really need to mention them at the top, pick important ones and downsize the text to fit them all.

I just list my schools with the subjects taught. I put information regarding extra curricular activities in my cover letter. I've only been in a few schools so that may not work for you.

    Thanks for the quick replies!!

Do you guys not list points like this (all from google and obvious duties!) but should they not be listed anyway

    • Developed and implemented work schemes and lesson plans for all year groups
    • Fostered a classroom environment conducive to learning
    • Administered tests and analyzed class and individual performance.
    • Participated in regular science departmental meetings,

The people interviewing you will know that you have to do all of this. It would be the same for all of the schools you worked in. Your cv should be two pages long max so you wouldn't be able to put all of these in. Put a paragraph in your cover letter summarizing all of this if you want to.

Its often best to present a concise CV rather than putting stuff in for the sake of putting it in. As I said stick to the format on the standard application form from www.educationposts.ie

I completely agree with what your saying, I don't want to put in stuff for the sake of it but I do think its important to highlight my extra skills gained and experience with extra curricular activities.
I know you can mention them in your cover letter as another poster mentioned above but for subbing jobs, its the CV they'l keep on file while the cover letter will get the bin.

I just really don't like the format from education posts and feel if you want to stand out, your not going to do so by sending in the same cv format as everyone else with the bare minimum of info in it! (at the same time I do realise there isn't a whole lot of variety with CV format but you can mix it up abit)

Thanks though for all the feedback :)

    • Participated in regular science departmental meetings,

To be honest I would not put the above points on a CV.

I set mine out as option two you listed above, but in those bullets I listed things like subjects taught in each school and to what level, class tutor, soccer manager, etc.

The points you have above make no sense to put in, in my opinion. The standard advice is 2 pages so I don't see where you would have space for that but in reality,

Developed and implemented work schemes and lesson plans for all year groups - every teacher does this for every class, that is a given, and really is a prerequisite for the job anyway

    • Fostered a classroom environment conducive to learning - again as opposed to saying I had very unfriendly classrooms where no one learned everything, I don't see the point in stating the obvious

    • Administered tests and analyzed class and individual performance.
    - again if you didn't you wouldnt get a job anywhere, this is what you must do, not something special really

    • Participated in regular science departmental meetings, - again we all do it, even more fun now with CP hours

I'm not trying to be harsh or flippant about what you have posted but those bullet points are a fancy way of saying I sat in meetings, did my plans, gave and corrected tests, and was nice to the kids, all this is a given for any job applicant

The Educationposts format is standard for a reason, Principals know exactly where to go for X,Y and Z that they want to find. Standing out from the crowd is fine in one way but not another.

If you want to mention extra curricular extras I recommend that you list them in the boxes near the bottom under other relevant information etc.

    e.g.
Successfully co-produced the School Xmas Drama at XXXXX NS
Successfully coached school camogie team winning county Final at YYYYY NS
Prepared ZZZZ NS school quiz team to participate in 3 local quizzes
