Farmed red deer shouldn't be that hard to trace, there's a few estates that do some captive breeding. As for releasing you may want to consult the NPWS on licencing etc etc because you can't just release animals into the wild.

Hope you got some serious handling facilities to transport said deer and keep them enclosed.
Normal cattle facilities and fencing wil not cut it.
Nor do deer really take kindly to being moved about like cattle either.
A cattle box load of mad bullocks is nothing compared to a fully mature red stag rubbed up the wrong way.

And that's why most farmed deer ( I'm refering to semi captive heards on estates ) will reach the food chain as "game" so they can be shot on site and processed as game. It's one thing dealing with small stuff like roe deer but I wouldn't want to be the one wrestling a big continental strain red deer into a cattle trailer...

If there's any deer in the area entice them in, salt licks, apples, molasses, plant a bit of tasty stuff in relatively clear areas etc etc...

What kind of "wood" is it?If it is dense pak sitka spruce, they wont go near it.As it is literally lifeless on the ground level. If it is broad leaf/mixed there is a better chance.Although ten years of age they can still run amuck in a plantation that age.

A lad I knew let some reds out in to a plantation area like that and was sorry he did. It was a job to get them there in the first place, but they ruined the trees. Once the trees were ruined the deer were not too happy and paced the fence, which is depressing to see. Even though they had LOADS of room.
Eventually they all made their way in to the food chain and the big stag is mounted on his wall.
It was not the best project and I would advise your mate to think twice.

its all broad leaves. there is some reds in it already but he was thinking of adding a few more " little ladies " as he put it.

Just make sure he balances it right with a herd size as you can over pouplate the area too,and that will benefit neither deer or plantation.
They will over browse the forest and if enclosed start to stress out and start starving.
