3g Proposal to Pat Rabbitte - Boards Consultation

Hail fellow folk of the 3g world :D:D I have been promising to do this for a long time so here we go:

Proposal/Lobby to Minister Pat Rabbite in regards to lack of 3g "Broadband" Requirements

It is about 3g broadband products that are NOT part of the NBS.

I am writing up and lobbying to the minister - a proposal to try and bring in minimum requirements for marketing, selling and using 3g services which will in turn allow for more accurate and structured recourse for people who are having issues with 3g broadband.

As you well know Ireland uses 3g in terms of filling the digital broadband divide. So why should it not meet a minimum requirement if it is sold as "broadband" or any viable sort of internet technology for that matter. Like all technology it must meet a minimum requirement.

The starting point requirements could be:

    These requirements will be:
    - provision of stated minimum speed
    - provision of stated maximum latency
    - the provision of coverage maps that also outline areas with 7.2, 14.4, or 21.6 mbs (vodafone already do this so why not the others)
    - provision of a maximum conjestion ratio per site and a buffer to allow nomadic 3g use by people.

These are only initial guidelines and have not been intregrated into a finalized proposal....it needs a lot of work and ideas

this proposal will be built around your experiences and your thoughts as well as mine: To post here you must share you experience with your 3g provider in one paragraph and then in another paragraph what you would change or like to see in this proposal :)

You can then write anything in the third and beyond paragraphs if you so wish.

    FORMAT:
Paragraph 1 - my 3g experience with as many details as desired
Paragraph 2 - my thoughts and opinions on the proposal

This format will help me compile all the relevant data easily and integrate into the proposal documentation. I want to bring to bear the experiences of as many people as possible. Your Quoted Paragraph 1 and 2 will be used in this document.

Also if you could Please also post your real first name if you want and if you want your constituency including whether you are rural or not :)

i can also take as many private messages if you so choose :) I dont know if this will work but lets see if we can build this document together :D

Sorry off format already, don't see how a company can quote a minimum speed unless its 0.00Mbps, its a deal killer right at the start as its unworkable, I think I know what you are getting at but needs wording better.

    But back on format........

My speeds aren't great but good enough 2Mbps off peak , 1Mbps during the afternoon and sub 500kbps at peak times with periods often of a week when evening (peak period) use is pointless. Edit: But depending on variables like school holidays etc speeds can go down at any time. No other choice MBB or nothing (other than satellite or dial up).

My thoughts are that disclosure of actual speeds at specific times of the day that users get is more important than regulating mimimum speeds. Buyer Beware but they need to be given the information to make an informed buying decision. The issues that p!sses me of most is the likes of 3 telling everyone that asks that there is Great Coverage in their area and then not allowing them out of contract when that Great Coverage turns out to be a 50kbs connection at peak times. Also NO contracts for MBB should be in excess of 12months no matter what the feebees, MBB is to variable for long contracts. Edit: MBB should never be advertised or sold as a replacement for fixed line broadband.

Due to very little feedback i am cancelling my work on this lobbying proposal for the minister. The basis of this proposal was to be built around as many experiences shared here as possible however since we have had only one person (thank you by the way :) ) share their experience and opinion I do not have enough to go forward with this nor would it be prudent for me to do so using my time to try and build a proposal around very little real world user experiences since this proposal was specifically to highlight peoples problems and was to be built around this.

    :(
