I'm looking for a media player that I can have set up so I can upload stuff to it over the net via FTP (or any other protocol really, i'm not fussy).

basically, my mum is in the UK and I'm here in Ireland and I want to be able to upload video's to her so she can watch them on her telly without too much messing around.

i got her a USB drive and a sumvision cylcone a while ago, but it packed up after a few weeks and i haven't been over there to replace it since.

my sister is going to be there for her birthday though with her boyfriend and i can get him to set up a new one if i can get it sent to her, so it's just a matter of finding something that fits the bill, the bill being:

    USB connectivity for the HDD
Wifi to connect to her router
internet/FTP or similar remote access for uploading content TO it.
easy to operate for a pensioner, the fewer buttons and simpler the interface the better.

does any one have any recommendations?

    thanks in advance. :)

would it have remote access though?

and i was hoping for something that would be very simple to set up initially as it would be done by a non-techie.

my plan was for my sisters BF to get it locally online (i.e. putting in the wifi password using the telly) and for me to set up the rest via logmein on my mums laptop to i can upload to it and i don't know if that would fit the bill?

it would also need to be orderable and deliverable from somewhere in the UK (sorry, forgot that bit) so it would arrive in time for the weekend. :)

How about a Boxee Box, ticks all the boxes and it does vpn. Setup a vpn at your house and have it connect and then you can connect to it as a local drive once you know the local ip you've given it.

Cool, let us know how it goes.

Boxee is perfect for the non techie, I've one at my Mam and Dads, they use it lots and found it easy to navigate and use once I'd configured it. They just use the D-Pad with play/pause, the keyboard is a bit of a gimmick. It's got an RF remote too so no pointing, hide it away if you want.

haha, my sister managed to get it set up in about 10 minutes which was good.

i haven't actually set up the remote access yet, but i've unexpectedly had to go to the UK to pick up a new car this weekend, so i'll get to play with it first hand and set everything up properly, so i'll let you know next week, assuming it all goes well. :)
