    Hi All,

Ok Mechanic has one of these in the garage, I quite like the car and am considering putting down a deposit today.

Am I stone mad to buy this model of car as I have heard they are very problematic or has anyone had any good experiences with this model?

    Thanks,
    Gary

Problems I have had with mine and apparently an awful lot of others have had the same.

    1. Clutch and flywheel (€1,400 by VW or €500 by yourself)
    2. Front shocks (€70 plus fitting)
    3. Wishbone bushings (€20 plus fitting)
    4. Electric handbrake (€120)
    5. Immobiliser (€500 VW fix)

Having said that it is perfect otherwise and once you get the above jobs done you should be flying with no other problems. If the car hasnt had any of the above done I wouldnt bother to be honest.

Dual mass flywheels are the devil!

Can't see how you'd manage a clutch and flywheel change for €500!

There has been a good few complaints about these OP, but you also have to remember there are a lot of them on the road and presumably a lot of them running fine.

Bought the clutch and solid flywheel and did it myself hence the €500 for parts.

I assumed the "yourself" meant through a mechanic.

    Fair play.

I would not touch one of that year, too many issues - oil pump, injectors, steering rack, electronic parking brake, etc, a real mine field and the potential to break your heart and wallet. 2008 would be a minimum on that model Passat for me.

Jasus thats a fair list, I have gone to the mechanic (family friend so he is fairly straight up) and he said this is one of the few passats he has only seen for services and tyres since new so hopefully thats good,

I have gave him my car as a deposit on it, T-Belt and new service parts all included in deal, this hasnt had injector problems to date and it has just over 100000 miles on it.

Do all these models have the electronic parking brake, I viewed the car head to toe and actually cannot remember seeing/not seeing a physical handbrake?

    Yes they all do.

Yes. And those PD TDI engines suffer from a problem with the oil pump getting dislodged from the engine, not to mention turbo and injector failure. The only 2.0 TDI Passat I would look at is one with the CR engine, but they didn't come out until mid 2008. By that stage the problems with the electric handbrake should have been sorted as well.

I don't think they suffer from outright turbo failure.. Oil pump issues can be resolved with a new part (speak to george on here) Injector failure is covered by a recall.

Nice cars and fairly good on diesel, just do your checks etc.
