    Hello,
My husband is currently working in Canada. He has a full Irish EC licence but to drive artics in Canada he needs to change his Irish one for an English one. does anyone know how he can do this & will it affect the category he has in any way?
    Thanks

To do it legally he needs to be resident in UK.
If this condition is fulfilled, all he need to do is swap Irish licence for UK licence.

Why don't they want to accept Irish licence?

    It's a commonwealth thingy I suspects.

Canada is part of the common wealth, so they would take the UK licence, but probably not a EU licence.

OP, you will need an resident address in the UK to get this, anywhere, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales.

Thanks, EU one def not accepted.
When you say resident address does that mean he has to apply from the uk?

Yeah, he has to "be resident in the UK". Does ether of you have anyone living in the UK? You could use their address. He might need to spend a week there to do this.

Yes. You need a physical address for the licence to be sent to. Also you have to send the DVLA your passport.

Ireland does not recognise a Canadian licence either for exchange purposes. You have to go via the UK or else start all over again here.

OT but just another practical reason why we should rejoin the commonwealth.

If someone moves over to the UK but has an Irish licence will they need to change it to a UK licence or can they keep their Irish licence even if they are living there?

He needs to sign a form certifying that he has been living in the UK for the preceding 6 months. He will also have to notify DVLA of subsequent change of address. Making a false declaration to obtain a licence is a crime under s174 Road Traffic Act. Thought it would be worthwhile to comment so your husband can take it into account.....

    How would they know?

    How would they know?

Character is how you act when no one is watching.....

Irrespective, I believe the charter precludes encouraging the breaking of laws.

Personally, being an expat, I prefer knowing that I'm not living on the edge - in this case the OP's husband is a professional driver and, imagine, his visa status will depend either on that qualification or maintaining a blemish free record. Transferring an Irish licence to UK followed immediately by a transfer to a Canadian provincial one may spark a review. I'd rather do the test in Canada than worry, maybe the OP's husband is the same.

Thank you for your opinion. We shall let the OP make up their own mind.
