Hi Guys..i have 2 uncles in belmullet,co mayo..They are concerned about the upcoming uk digital switch over and possible the loss of the uk channels they currently receive.,

Any advice on when the switch over happens will they lose or continue to receive the uk channels?
I dont even know where they would be receiving the uk signal from..

If they get the signal direct from NI, BBC2 will disappear after midnight on Oct 10th with the rest going after midnight on Oct 24th to be replaced by a digital signal requiring a digital tuner such as a Saorview TV or STB.

Or from a local deflector (they are required to switch off their analogue transmissions by the end of Dec). I see from the regulators website no deflectors were licensed in Mayo this year but they may still be transmitting without a licence. If this is the case and when the signal does finally go their options for the free UK channels will be a satellite receiver and dish.

Are they ready for the switching off of the Irish analogue channels on Oct 24th, have they upgraded for Saorview?

If you do get someone put up a satellite dish make sure it's a decent aluminium one. The steel Sky dish lasts about 6 months down there with the Atlantic wind

Thanks guys for the reply..uncle has a saorview box bought but not connected yet as far as i know..
I guess the best thing to do is wait and see if bbc2 dissapears first in october and that will tell us..Am i right in thinking that if this is the case he will the be able to pick up freeview on saorview on the one hd box?

    thanks again

He won't be picking up a UK transmitter in Belmullet. It will be a local 'deflector' & will never broadcast Freeview. Go with satellite for UK channels.

As far as I know the local deflector is still on air. It should go off air either at the end of October or the end of the year. Either way I suggest they get a FreeSAT satellite system with an alumium dish sooner rather than later. They will get more channels right now and it will save panic coming up to X-mas.

There is a TV shop on the main street in belmullet that is connected with the deflector system. I don't have the phone number to hand, but they should be able to explain what is going to happen better. The deflector changed channel earlier this year

I think this is the shop:

Please let us know when they say the deflector is shutting down.

    Hi guys..

In Belmullet today..installed satellite dish along with their existing aerial set up.

Put a freesat box in one room and a Ferguson ariva 150 combo in the other.
Freesat box is flying it bringing in 90% signal on the bbcs channel 4 etc.

I have noticed on the ariva that bbcs and channel 4 etc are around 75% and that some channels are as low as 20% but are still clearing.

Is this just a difference in the boxes or should I investigate more before I head home in the morning.find it strange some channels are showing 0% but are still clearing??

    Cheers

I installed aerial and satellite dish for my sister in Dublin last year, set it up with a FTA satellite receiver. Was getting 80 something % signal strength with the FTA receiver, when I replaced it with a Freesat receiver it displayed 100% signal strength. Down to the receiver in that case.

Swopped the ariva box with the freesat box this morning and to my suprise the freesat box was still pulling in 90%..plugged the ariva back in and signal dropped to 75%..
