Second time, same injury

Back in October last year, I tried to start lifting weights, did something awkward/stupid on the my first try and ended up with a pinched nerve. In August this year, I tried to start learning to swim. I got to the second lesson where I started to move my arms, and the same thing appeared to happen. I'm only now recovering, had to sleep sitting up for 3 weeks, etc. Not good.

My problem now is that I've tried 2 new fitness regimes and both seemed to have caused a similar injury. I'd like to avoid it again, but really want to get back to learning to swim, so who should I be talking to, in terms of getting that part of my body (upper spine, left side, near the shoulder?) ready - would a physio be worth it? Is there anything I can do to help the prevention of a repeat? Should I be talking to a doctor? My doc told me that any sort of operation that high up is out of the question.

Note that I also started yoga in that period without a flare up, and I've been cycling without problem for a few years - the first time I put it down to just tring something new without warm up and bad form - the swimming though I'm doing 1-on-1 with a trainer, so I'm hoping if i did something stupid he would've noticed.

Any tips of how to approach a return would be helpful.

Was your pinched nerve diagnosed by a medical professional or self diagnosed? How is your shoulder mobility? Have you ever had it assesed?

Mod note:I'm actually in 2 minds here whether this is a medical advice thread or not. Can we have medical advice please

    +1 to all of this

I'm going to throw "Levator scapulae" as something to discuss with your physio as it can cause some nerve pain up around C3 to 5.

I recommend you attach a leach to your shoulder and so he can restribute the negative blood flow from the area as part of a detoxifying cleanse :D

It was diagnosed by my doctor (as near as he could tell - he didn't call it pinched nerve, but had some other name for it - beginning with c?) and I was put on painkilles and inflammatories.

It is probably down to shoulder mobility alright, but who would assess such a thing?

I work in Bishopstown in Cork so that's probably the easiest place to get sorted. Wilton or anywhere close by would suit too.

I'll add a thread to Cork aswell see if can recommend someone, but what am I looking for? A physio? A sports injury guy? A masseur?
