HI folks, my s2000 failed the NCT a couple of weeks back for some small bits and pieces and also for a corroded brake line. I've ordered new a new brake line but it hasn't come on time for the re-test. Anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do? (Was thinking of some sanding and painting just to get through, will be getting the new line fitted as soon as it comes in).
Is there anything I can buy in the likes of Halfords that will make it look like its sorted for the NCT?
Obviously aware of the dangers of the rusted line, wont be using the car until its sorted except for driving to the re-test.
    Thanks, Mark.

Em wait till the line arrives to do the retest ? that would be easier. phone them and rearrange the test date.

Hi Listermint, unfortunately this Friday will be my last day for the re-test. After that I will have to pay €55 and go for a full new test! I only found out today that the lines wouldn't arrive on time, not happy!!

Yeah, they basically said "its not their fault". Very annoying!

If I were you I'd sand and paint them and put them through. If it does fail again it's only an extra €1 then paying for full test anyway. 2x €28

okay, well wirebrush them and sand them down to get the most rust off and then you can paint them up a bit. should do the trick

Unless they are really bad and corroded though they should be fine went cleaned, sanded and coat of paint on it.

Some motor factors will make them up on the spot if you bring the old one as a pattern.

Clear them off rust (sandpaper, wirebrush, maybe sanding) and put your car through NCT (without painting them).
My car passed NCT like that.

The girlfriends Puma went through and they said lines were corroded, lad said what ever you do dont paint them as he would fail us again, to be fair they needed doing, so they got replaced, but if its just surface rust a quick clean up will do the trick

Sorry for being pedantic but I'd imagine the chap would pay €28 for the retest and if he fails he'd probably not be able to get his new brake line fitted and retest rebooked within the allowed 30 day period of the original test...hence would need to book a full retest at a charge of €55.

I failed on a corroded brake line towards the end of last year. I left it quite late towards the retest to go about getting the job done and was coming up to Christmas. The few garages I went to wouldn't take on the job as they said it was a bit specialised and involved a bit of skill with bending and joining the pipes correctly, think they need to be flared at the joins as I recall. They seemed to be winding up for Christmas at the time too and it wasn't overly handy as the fuel tank would need to be dropped.

To cut a long story as short as I possibly can I decided to get under the car and have a nosey at the offending brake line. In reality at the very worst it was slightly tarnished. The line was absolutely solid out. I decided to attack it myself with a dremel and and some brasso. It came up like new. I put it through for the retest and bobs your uncle she passed.

I think a lot would boil down to the tester you get for the retest. Some might see that the line was doctored with and fail you again. If the pipe is solid and has not being compromised from cleaning it others might apply some common sense and pass you. If the pipe is corroded to such an extent that it is compromised I would suggest that you get it changed though. If such is the case I cant see it passing regardless of the tester who retests it...
