I have a house in Newry and trying to avoid paying tv license in UK and wondering if there is anyway to get free tv channels with a saorview box? The house is in Newry but looking over towards Carlingford. How does Saorview work? Where would u pick up a saorview box?:-)

Just like Freeview in the North, TV connected to an aerial pointing at a (Saorview) transmitter - http://www.saorview.ie/make-the-switch/.

    saorview retailers - http://www.saorview.ie/equipment/find-a-retailer/

If you have a TV you have to have a TV licence.
You could put the TV on a mountain near Omeath and watch it through binoculars, I suppose.
Where would u pick up a saorview box?

Television shop? As noted here, a Freeview HD box will do the trick.

OP, you have to pay the TV licence if you have a TV, even if you never switch it on and regardless of what channels you can or can't receive and whether you have an aerial or dish.

The NI transmitters will broadcast RTE1/2 and TG4 along with the UK channels so you might as well get equipped for Freeview HD and pay the licence.

Only three of the 50 NI transmitters will carry RTE1/2 and TG4.

OP is in Newry, so will need to pick up Saorview from over the border.

Yes I have to pick the signal up from Carlingford/Omeath. Can't get signal on Freeview from where I am located in Newry. For some reason im just not picking it up. Might be the surrounding mountains.

Hard to track it down but finally found out which of them will broadcast Saorview....

Brougher Mountain is the only one of the main three which will transmit Saorview

Black Mountain which is on the west side of Belfast and 2.5 km SW of Divis will transmit Saorview

Carnmoney Hill which is 9 kms north of Belfast city centre and 1.4 kms NE of Newtownabbey will transmit Saorview.

It isn't Saorview, doesn't even have the full channel lineup & is standard def. only. It's officially known as the 'NImux'.

Sorry, you are correct. I was reading the NI switchover document which liberally uses the word 'Saorview' but of course it only includes RTE1/2 & TG4 and won't broadcast certain programs where there are rights issues e.g. sports fixtures.

To get Saorview and Freeview combined the best box to get is a Freeview HD box. You would probably need an outdoor aerial, and a TV licence.

That is not true. The licence is to receive live TV (from anywhere not just UK channels). A TV that is never switched on does not need a licence but is pretty pointless. A TV that is only used say for DVDs would not need a licence though it would make sense to disable the tuner.
These comments apply to the UK including NI, the republic maybe be different.

There is a whole thread specifically for discussion of the TV licence. Suffice to say you may need one and in the end a judge would decide.

Until October 10 /24 the Freeview signals coming from Divis are very weak indeed. Change the postcode to your own at this webpage:
    http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/postcodechecker/main/trade/BT34+1AT/NA/0/NA

    For Saorview http://www.saorview.ie/make-the-switch/coverage-map/

If you can get an OK signal from Divis (BBC from October 10) you will (October 24) get the three UK COM muxes too . Divis may require two aerials ?

Alle new equipment should be FreeviewHD.

    Lars :)

Yeah look, there's no avoiding the TV licence and you can't discuss how to avoid paying it here. There is a whole thread over in Broadcasting to talk about the TV licence.

Now if you want to discuss Saorview reception in NI, by all means do so. But take any TV Licencing discussion to the relevant thread elsewhere or I'll close this one.
