    Inaugural Limerick Jazz Festival

    September 28-30, 2012

The historic city of Limerick will celebrate its first-ever jazz festival with a lineup of some of the most exciting live performance groups ever to play in Ireland it was announced today (Monday).

The inaugural Limerick Jazz Festival will take place between September 28 – 30th 2012, and will include exclusive performances by the Joe Locke/Geoffrey Keezer Group from the USA and the Lianne Carroll Trio from the UK. Irish performers will include the Black Magic Big Band and Crisis Point.

The headline acts will perform at Limerick’s leading venues, including the Lime Tree Theatre, Dolan’s Warehouse, the Belltable Arts Centre and Pery’s Hotel. There will be many other free performances across the city over the festival weekend, and lots of other special events in the preceding week to get Limerick “in the mood” including a jazz trail of local venues.

The festival is being staged by Limerick Jazz Society and is supported by the Arts Council and Shannon Development.
“The festival is building on our thirty years’ experience of bringing the best of jazz to the mid-west,” said John Daly, Chairperson of Limerick Jazz Society. “The jazz scene here is recognised as one of the strongest in the country with a lot of educational activity as well as performances and we can’t wait to welcome such tremendous jazz musicians to Limerick city.”
Limerick Jazz Society is the longest continually active jazz society in Ireland and 2012 marks its 30th anniversary. Its regular spring and autumn seasons include regular performances by leading international and Irish performers. Since 2007 it has also provided jazz education programs through Limerick Jazz Workshop, the only regular jazz workshop in Ireland outside Dublin.

The inaugural Limerick Jazz Festival has been welcomed by Eoghan Prendergast Limerick Development Division Manager Shannon Development who hopes it will be a successful and exciting weekend.
“Shannon Development is delighted to be of support to the Limerick Jazz Festival, particularly as the Limerick Jazz Society celebrates its 30th Anniversary this year. Limerick’s culture is incredibly diverse in its richness and variety and music has a huge role to play in that. The ability of the Limerick Jazz Society to get some of the world’s top jazz performers to play in Limerick over the years is testament to the respect in which the society is held by the jazz community and we are very pleased to support them in this exciting and special event for them and for Limerick’s cultural offering”.
