    West Coast that is.

We were lucky we didn't have the dogs with us. They would have been torn to shreds by this guy.

Never gotten one with tusks this big before. He was a legitimate free range boar on a cattle ranch we look after for the owner. Normally the tusks get broken from fighting, but this guy had a bit of a club foot, so maybe he didn't fight that much.

He took off running for a short while, then it looked like he had enough as he turned to face us and looked like he was going to charge.

A solid hit from a 270 Win at 60 yards and a 22 mag between the eyes changed his mind somewhat.

And you are right,he didnt do much fighting in the wild.Only set of tusks I've ever seen like that have been have been on domesticated wild boar living in enclosures.

Nice boar. Some good eating there.
How much did the blacktail weigh in at?

The deer wasn't ours, but he looked like a little fella (though blacktails are small).

The same ranch has a resident monster blacktail buck with a harem of about 12 does.

We sometimes see him out of season, and were hunting for him when we came across the boar.

As for eating this fella, it'll be entirely sausage. I don't like the taste of big boars, too gamey by far, and it pisses everyone off when I grill wild boar chops them - the stink gets everywhere. I still have 2 lbs of sausage from the one I got last year.
I always smoke the hams though. And the ham hocks make fantastic ham and pea soup.

Exactly. I have heard of hunting preserves castrating young piglets and turning them out so that they won't fight and end up with massive tusks.

This guy wasn't huge - about 280lbs and genuinely wild, but maybe he was a lover and not a fighter! He certainly had the balls for it!
