Hi all, I am going servicing my above car soon and I was just wondering how much oil does my corolla actually take? Don't want to be guessing and buying too little or too much.

Also I have noticed the Corolla is quiet heavy on petrol? Its only doing about 70 city/sub-urban kilometres to €15-€20 (Petrol price I am paying is €169.9 per litre). Any Idea why this is? Been driving as economical as possible and checking tyre pressures as often as I can but its still pretty heavy on juice...

    Thanks!

At roughly 20 mpg it is pretty bad. A full service might help. Other things off the top of my head are wheel allignment, bearings ( jack up wheels and give them a spin), sticking brakes/handbrake, tyre pressure, excess weight in the car, roof rack. Other than that it depends on how long your sitting in traffic and at lights. I used to get about 30 mpg in my old 1.3 lancer about town here but that was avoiding rush hour and the schools finishing.

A four litre bottle of 10w 40 will do it. It probably takes around three litres. 5w 40 might help improve your mpg also

How does the emissions do in the NCT?

    Cheers for the reply!

I will give it a "Full" service next week :P Fuel filter will have to wait till the following week!

Wheel alignment hasn't been done since NCT which was last February. Would it need to be done so soon? Bearings are sound.

Brakes are not sticking and handbrake is fine.

Only excess weight is my jacket really :P

    No roof rack.

I don't really be stuck in traffic and the figures I gave above is travelling from Galway to Headford and a bit further so I would be mainly averaging 80-100 kph and slowing to 50-60 kph going through 2 or 3 villages.

The car is standard except for a set of 15 inch alloys with newish tyres so I cant imagine this making such an impact. Car has 150,000kms on it.

Might try that 5w40 oil and see what happens.

I have heard of some sensor that goes in them that causes mpg to go down but cannot find where I have read that before.

    Thanks again.

EDIT: It passed the emissions test in February, havn't got the report with me for figures at the moment though.

was it 70 miles or kilometres, given that the corolla clocks are in mph

You should be up around the mid thirties for that run

Depends on the size of the tyre not the alloys but shouldn't effect it that much

Stick up the figures when you get a chance. The lambda sensor is the one your thinking off. It should show up in the test but as it was in february it may have failed since. A hole in your exhaust can also throw the sensor off causing it to inject to much fuel.

a clogged up air filter would leave it hard on juice

Right the Nct was actually done on the 5 of April this year.

    Emissions test:

    Low Idle (630 rpm) CO 0.15 vol% HC39ppm

    High Idle (3,090 rpm) Lambda 1.00 CO 0.21 vol% HC 50 ppm

    Dont know if this helps?

Just out of curiosity, if it is the lambda sensor is this good value? *Lambda sensor*

AFAIK a lambda reading of 1.00 is bang on. Unless it has failed since or a hole in the exhaust has developed. I can't think off anything else unless your method of figuring out your mpg is way off. If you stick in 50 euro of juice after the full service and work it out that way it should be reasonably accurate and will rule out your plugs and filters as the problem.

    Right will do.

So I put in €50 petrol, take note of how much I paid a litre and reset the trip, yeah?

Ye it's good value, but there a bit tricky to fit. Normally 90 quid in a MF. I'd rule out the hole on the exhaust first.

Yeah I think there may be a tiny hole in the middle section. Bringing it to an exhaust centre during the week and get it sorted. Then a full service and see what happens.

    Ill keep everything updated!

    Thanks!

That should sort it. Clean out your throttle valve too.

How would I go about doing that? :P

195/50/R15 is the tyre size. Just taught id mention it.

Id say bit too wide, there must be sticker on front door sil, or fuel lid, about tire sizes and pressure what is recommended..
If after your service and fixing fuel economy not better, then maybe go for computer test + emission test, might will show up something, thats pretty low figures, what you have, if lambda working fine, then could be airflow meter on the way out .... but usually all that kind problems show up on emission test.

After finding a hole about the size of a 1 cent coin in the rear silencer, would this be the cause?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    Probably

Patched the hole in the silencer, still doesn't seem great economy wise. Haven't filled it yet though to get figures on mpg. Used this stuff "Exhaust Repair Putty"

Only way to accurately measure fuel consumption is to fill the tank right up, zero the trip meter, drive say 100 miles, then fill it up again taking note of the number of litres needed to fill the car up, and divide the number of miles by the number of litres consumed. Then multiply this figure by 4.546 to get your mpg.

    Cheers thanks for that!
