    Hello all,

Im looking at getting an Ultrabook, mostly due to their size/weight, as ill be carrying it on a 50k round trip commute to college each day by bike (in panniers, it'll be dry and secure). I'd be able to stretch to €1200 if i needed to but would prefer to get one in around the 1k mark. Does anybod have any recommendations? So far ive been looking at the following:

    Asus 13.3" UX32VD-R3001V - i5 3317U/4G/500+24GB @ €999

The top end Inspiron 14z Ultrabook @ €1169

Does anybody have any other options and what are your thoughts on the above models.

    Thanks in advance,

    Andrew

I have an 11" MacBook Air, and am very happy with it. Very, very light and compact, but wouldn't be as powerful as some other ultrabooks if you stay within the same price range. Perfect though for internet, notes and general every day use.

I was looking at the mac Air's, i've never used a mac before so that would worry me, also the hard drive capacity seems very small. Being for college use i'd be looking to have word, excel etc on it, are they compatible?

For commuting/travelling I'd go with that

    http://outlet.ie.lenovo.com/store/lenovooe/en_IE/pd/productID.252215700

Much better built quality and comes with SSD

Keep an eye on that ,currently out of stock

You can get official microsoft word and excel for mac, not cheap though, probably around €100 for office: http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=amb_link_38563465_3?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=n%3A300435%2Ck%3AB003YCOJA8%7CB003YCOJAI&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=left-2&pf_rd_r=07VQEN34XS4Q8RRAB7Z3&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=235906767&pf_rd_i=10399231
but why not use things like google docs which are free. also mac have their own software as well

I think im gonna go for this, with 3 years service and accidental damage leaves it just over1k. Considering how im getting in i think it would be a smart move to get it covered. It also comes with office for free. Unless of course someone thinks its the wrong move.

Its a very big purchase for me so i need to make no mistakes.

    Thanks

Just to say, dell call it an ultrabook but really at 1.9kg in weight it is still pretty heavy to be honest (if portability is a big factor I would look at something else)

With a budget of 1200 Euro at your disposal, buying anything with a platter HDD is a mistake.

This SONY Ultrabook at Dabs comes with a real solid state disk and bundled with MS Office.

And not likely to come back, at least not with a 2nd generation Core i5. ;)
