ok, so l'm thinking about getting my 1st car. My dad doesn't think l should get a car now because the "quote they'll give me will be v high & so will the insurance" because of my age. He thinks if l do end up getting a car it should be a 1.1. Is he over exaggerating? lts v hard to talk to him about this cause hes v stubborn & thinks hes always right so thats why l have come here. he thinks l should get lessons 1st but then my mother thinks l should get a car, take the lessons & test in it cause il be more use to it & better chance of passing!! jeez what to do?!

l do need a car cause lm unemployed atm & not having a car is one of the problems! and yes l do have saved money in the piggy bank.

tbh l don't know a whole lot about cars or tax & insurance. does anyone think that insurance etc would be v high for a 21 yr old girl, no history of anythiny really! round how much would it cost? would it make a difference if l got a 1.1 or 1.3?

my bro has advised me on getting a corolla as a 1st car also, so whenever l do end up getting a car it will prob be that il get.

    any advice would be great.

    thanks! :)

Well you can't legally drive on your own without a full licence.

How would a car help you get a job? Petrol is expensive as are running costs.

The quote for what will be very high? (seeing as the " & so will the insurance" rules out the quote being for that)

lm obv gonna get a full licence before l drive. A car would help trust me, lv being in plenty of interviews where they are looking for flexible hours, could be working from 9pm til 2am & theres no bus near me at that time! & l cant be dependent on people for lifts, l need my own indepence. l was so close on getting a job but because l couldn't be flexible (ie no car) l didnt get the job! and l dont live in the city lm in the countryside!!

In future tell them your flexible, get the job then the car. How do you know that's the real reason you didn't get the job.

First get driving lessons and pass your drivng test.
Once you have a licence, you can get a car, but as you said yourself - insurance might be quite expensive, and fact that you don't have a job doesn't help here.
Unfortunately Ireland is a country which discriminates young drivers by setting insurance prices for them sky high. That's not fair and that's not good for anyone.

the job was an immidate start & was up against 2 other people for the job, they had cars! lm not saying thats the only reason l didnt get the job but not having a car & being flexible does play a huge part, l live in a small village so a car is a must for me. yeah l could do that but what if l ended up failing the driving test & then having to explain lm not so flexible as l said in the interview!

What if your paid 2k for a car. 600 for insurance, 250 for tax. 300 on maintaining it. 1.70 per litre, and o.ly get 100 per week from the government

The quote for you on your own car for the first time will be high. How high noone can say as each insurance company is different.

Tax for between 1.0 - 1.1 will be €278 for the full year in one payment.

Or you could pay every 6 months and it will be €154 or you could pay every 3 months and it will cost €78.

For a 1.2 - 1.3 €333, €184 or €94 respective of what period you choose to pay by.

Insurance will be high as you have no NCB and are a very high risk. At the end of this year, the beginning of next year insurance companies will not be able to offer different insurance policy prices based on gender so the most logical way for them to do it, is to increase the cost for women next year to match males or to come close between. The best guess is they will increase next year for you even if you have no accidents or claims.

Petrol currently costs on average €1.72 and a 50L tank will cost you the region of €65 - €70 to fill. ( assuming you don't drive it empty and fill just aroudn when the light comes on. That leaves about 8L in the reserve. )

Don't forget car servicing which if you can't do yourself or a family member can't do it, it will cost in the region of €100 - €200 depending on who you go to and what they actually do on the car.

If you can do it yourself Halfords do deals on oil €20 for 4 - 5 L of castrol. €6 for an oil filter. €10 - €20 for an air filter. €8 - €12 for spark plugs etc. The list goes on. The above is just basic running of the car and in my haste I've prob even left 1 or 2 things out. Like brake pads. €30 - €80 depending on what you need. Tyres is another, prob an average of €100 per tyre for a lot.

All wear n tear items or consumables that need looking after. That's if nothing else goes wrong with your car. There is also a lot more components of a car that are wear n tear. They are generally expensive to replace too.

Oh some people are saying maybe €600 for insurance. To be honest you are prob looking around €1000 if not more for first time insurance on your own.

Glad to help in a small way. Your father is right in that owning a car is a huge financial burden. Just one thing please. If you do buy a car, do not scrimp on tyres. The cheap chinese tyres are absolute muck and you will have no control. They are the only things on your car that touch the road. Do not scrmp on them. You can buy part worn premium tyres at a cheap price if money is tight.

Don't be afraid to pop on and ask what tyre should you get, it's a common question asked by many experienced and inexperienced drivers alike.

To be able to drive you've to first pass a theory test and get a learners permit

Then you have to do a minimum number of lessons with a certified instructor, and won't be able to drive on your own.

    Then you do your test

Have you got someone who would drive with you while you practice?

My sister in law recently got a 02 megane coupe 1.4 as her first car, on a provisional with her mum on the policy her own insurance 3rd party was €1050. Zero driving experience, she is not bad though. Has test in 5 weeks.

Did a lot of quotes for her with varying options. IF she had a full licence and had a 1.0l car even with no experience she could have got insured for around €650, she is 25.

Try insure.ie put in your details and a few different car models to see what your options are.

Best thing to do is look through carzone, autotrader, donedeal etc and try and find a car you like within budget, Don't use all budget on the car, estimate insurance and tax around €1800, this can be confirmed with the next stages. Car motortax.ie to get rates fro road tax. Then ring insurance companies, brokers and get quotes for third party fire and theft, this is near min. required by law. This should give you an idea of how much it will cost you to get driving.

Once you do your lessons, apply for the test as quick as possible. This will reduce the bad habits being picked up and increase your chance of passing first time.

For a first time car I would look at the Toyota Yaris, VW Polo & Ford Fiesta. These are all small engined decent cars that don't give to much trouble.
