Laptop for DCU Multimedia?

Got emailed this morning about laptops for DCU students and to be honest, from what I've heard there is no way those will handle the software needed for my course (multimedia).

Just curious if anyone here knows what's required to run smoothly for the 3 years (and to avoid crazy render times at that).

I was thinking MacBook Pro, but I really don't want to spend that much money if I don't have to, hope someone can help, thanks.

I was considering that too, but there's no way I'll be able to afford a Mac, at least not right now. I don't think it's a requirement, but it would certainly help.

Anyone know what the cheapest one is, or know any good deals?

I'd go for a Dell XPS from the UK outlet store.
Not sure if this link will work but here it is, just select i7 as your processor and you can use deliverme.ie for postage to Ireland.
The 1 year warranty will still be valid here.

Decent processor, graphics and reasonably large SSD, probably not as good as the latest MacBook but quite a bit cheaper.

Some of the programs we'll be using in the course will be Mac exclusive. Like Final Cut Pro.

Using a MacBook Pro myself, switched when I did the course 6 years ago and it was the best decision I made, haven't stopped and will be using it this year also!

I'm hoping the software isn't forced on us, I'd prefer to be able to do my projects in Vegas Pro that I have installed on my rig at home.

You're not forced to use Final Cut Pro, but you will have classes using it, and use it in exercises, and be taught to import footage of the Sony EX3s you'll have to use into it.

I encourage people to buy macs if you are buying a new laptop, they'll have a longer life and won't work out any more expensive in the long run then.
