Filter Traffic Lights and Yellow Boxes

Right - I've already passed my test but I've managed to never drive through a set of filter lights in my life because I did my test in Cavan which has a grand total of 1 set of traffic lights and my driving hasn't actually managed to take me far enough away to get some practice at filters/box junctions too often.

So just want to brush up on the rules of them because I'm gonna be driving up to the big smoke on Sunday probably so want to be 100% of what I'm at.

I approach junction and I am turning right.

If filter light is green I'm good to go and can simply turn in to the right when I get to the junction as I have the right of way - of course making sure it's clear to go and that.

If the filter light is off and the main light itself is still green I can enter the box junction and wait while the oncoming cars pass by and when I get a clearance in the traffic I can go and I need to kinda make sure not to hang about once I get my chance as I'll become an obstacle if I keep waiting. Of course as long as it's safe to go.

Is this pretty much right - think it is from what I've read on the rules but no harm in making sure it's right all the same :)

Cheers and any other advice in taking junctions with filters is more than welcome :)

    Your understanding is bang on!

I'll add this; if, while waiting for traffic to clear, the light turns amber, you should complete your turn once you are sure no one is running the opposite light. The same applies to it turning red. You do not have to wait for the filter light unless oncoming traffic is braking the lights.

So basically if I'm in the box and I go into the box when it's still green and no gap appears due to the traffic coming the other way and light turns amber or even red - the fact that I'm in the box means I have the road so I get proceed to turn right once I get the chance.

As soon as I get my gap I go once I'm sitting in the box regardless of light colour - once it's clear to go.

And for approaching a light and I see a guy stuck in the box - if I have the lights for me I proceed ahead regardless of him - I don't give him right of way to get out unless he's in my way (approaching from a side road and want to turn right so I'd be crossing 2 lanes of traffic basically and he's in a position that's blocking my way)
