    so sayeth this guy anyway

it's an interesting read even if it's all (well, mostly) bollocks. judging by the tone of the article I'd imagine he was behind on his "aren't white people evil" quota and someone stuck on an episode of breaking bad as he was making a cup of ethically sourced coffee.

Well it's certainly a different take on breaking bad. Seems like a real stretch. Anyway thanks for the link.

In every other drug, the purer it is, the more value it has. It has this value precisely for the reason the author is trying to claim it wouldn't: dilution. The purer the product, the more you can dilute it, and the more money and product you can make in the middle. The purer the coke, the purer the weed, the more you can cut it with something else whether baking soda or tobacco.

Blue weed is very popular, as well: http://www.leafly.com/hybrid/strawberry-cough

I also just noticed the Author seems to be confusing crack with crystal meth. One is powdered, the other is crystal. Not a huge difference, but they certainly aren't exactly the same.

yeah but the point he's making is that this wouldnt matter to the end users.. and he's right about that. it'd only benefit the people on the supply side of things as it just got cut further and further down to just barely enough to give enough of a high to keep addicts hungry

and breaking bad does make a point of mentioning from time to time how much the street users love walters blue meth as if they get it in the form we see it being made

Some users would get it pure. Most wouldn't. However, all the distributors would.

IN any case, we do all know this is a TV show, right? If we wanted reality, we'd not watch TV. The show has nothing to do with meth, and everything to do about Walter's journey.

Ah so that explains why there are so many skinheads in the show........ :pac:

Also seems the author of this piece has been in the news lately. http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-19597437

His point about the quality of the product not mattering doesn't hold up. He compares it to the first season of the wire, but later in that show the quality becomes a big issue.
About the white supremacist part he's right that white audience like to see white people as the main characters in a show, I imagine there's mainly Asian people in Chinese films as well, but it doesn't make em racist!

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,827 ✭✭✭christmas2012

I didnt get a white supremacist feel of it,no i wouldnt say so either.I think its very odd to make such a claim,if it was you can be sure as hell it would be pulled.

And like the other poster said, chinese like to see chinese actors, asians like to see asians, indians like to see indians, arabs like to see arabs, whites like to see whites and so on..

Doesnt make it particularly racist, but maybe on another level it is..Given the fact like only like to see like..

    • Saul Goodman

This isn't surprising considering that people of German descent make up 17% of the US populace.

    Apart from there being actual
    Neo-Nazis
in the show, I don't see the white supremacist angle really.

American critics seem to be obsessed with race. A show called "Bunheads" (about ballet) recently took on black actors after pressure from people (the writer of "Grey's Anatomy" among them) to "diversify". Same thing was said about HBO's, "Girls".

A quick look at some stats from New Mexico probably give a bit more insight into the cultural make-up of where the show is predomintly set:
According to the 2010 Census, 68.4% of the population was White (40.5% non-Hispanic white), 2.1% was Black or African American, 9.4% American Indian and Alaska Native, 1.4% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, 3.7% from two or more races. 46.3% of the total population was of Hispanic or Latino origin (they may be of any race).[38]

So this would be a good starting point as to the ethnicity of the casting.

So there is no white supremisist argument at all.

Still a lot of Germans though!!!

Anyone notice the lack of swans in Breaking Bad lately...(Maybe I should just get my coat and head over to After Hours)..

And Elliot Schwartz stole his company. A black guy who is a thief, the plot thickens. Or maybe he's just Jewish and really financially thrifty.

The meth is blue. And Marie really likes purple.

And Beneke knocked over some oranges.

    Woah, man.

Maybe the show is trying to push some kind of multi-coloured gay "agenda".

    (By having no gay characters).

I thought Gus was supposed to be Gay!

How did the writer not notice that the chemist in the Mexican cartel (and he seems to also not understand what a cartel is) was white?

Or does that just compound whatever point that he's trying to squish the show to fit - that the brown guys are too dumb to make meth and need a whitey of their own?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,903 ✭✭✭Hande hoche!

Well there are Mexicans of near completely European heritage.
Sure it's easier for the writer to ignore the elements that don't fit neatly into his narrative.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,738 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Sure even Louis C.K. is Mexican :D

Are you being serious? I watched those scenes with no subtitles, and I had assumed they were brothers... Also 'hermanos'.

I thought they were just friends...

Many married politicians with families have been involved in gay scandals. The actor who plays Gus also hinted he might be gay in this interview, but it's left up to the audience to decide really.

Gus is definitely gay, only the loss of a close lover could makes someone so bitter and hateful, such as when hector whacked max in the flashback scene

Berkeley-educated botanist Chon (maybe the only name whiter than “White”)

    Chon? What's white about that?

Sounds positively Asian if you ask me in a non racist way :P
