Advice on groupset conversion

I recently switched from a triple crank to a double (shimano 105 5600 53/39) on my road bike. As I'm still using the existing 8 speed triple shifters with the crank (it works, but only just ... ), I'm wondering what else I need to pick up in order to make the complete switch to a double, 9 or 10 speed system?

Am I missing anything from the following?
    • shifters (L & R)
    • Front DR
    • Cassette
    • Rear DR
    • Chain

Also, is it possible to mix and match different components (eg. Tiagra, 105 etc.)?

    Cheers!

Thinking of upgrading groupset myself. I'm not an expert in this area but you will need all of the above, plus cables. And given that the shifters are also your brake levers, you may well need new brake calipers too. Be aware that upgrading your groupset can be very expensive - especially when you buy it piecemeal. You could look out for 2nd hand stuff in adverts.

You can mix and match stuff, but will need to check compatibility - 9/10 speed, pull ratios etc.

He won't need new brake levers. You can mix and match most any of the shimano ranges (2300, sora, tiagra, 105, ultegra, dura ace) to a certain extent as well as using non-shimano chains and cassettes (so long as the cassettes aren't campagnolo spacing). However, if you use 9 speed components on a 10 speed set up or vice versa you may run into trouble. Shifters obviously have to match cassette and chain but most of the rest of the stuff has some wiggle room.

For instance, you're currently using a 10 speed crankset with an 8 speed (which isn't advisable for best results, but as you said, it basically works), I'm currently using an old exage front derailleur designed for a 7 speed groupset with a 9 speed set up as well as using a 10 speed derailleur, again on a 9 speed setup, works fine.
