I would think between 60/80 for the pump and whatever the mechanic charges...which could be anything given the prices some mechanics charge.

    Hmm,

I was quoted €600-ish by the garage, parts & labour. To replace the pump and a manifold (can't recall exactly what was said, as I was in shock at the cost)

I'm hoping the likes of Nissan_doctor or George_dalton can advise....

Make sure and get the pump with the metal impeller . The plastic ones tend to shatter .
Mine took me 40 mins to do
But the 10mm bolts are very flimsy might concider replacing them too

80 labour, + cost of pump + coolant. That's assuming an hours labour, it could end up working out a bit more than the hour.

You'd probably want to get the belts changed at the same time. Labour could jump a bit, but it's not a massive job. Well at least it's not a massive job on the 6 cylinder cars anyway.

    Definitely not 600 quid anyway.

I'll find out exactly what he's looking to do and I'll report back here later on.

Roughly what's the cost of a pump? I think he's looking at getting a BMW oem pump from the UK.

I'd avoid the OEM BMW pump, the impeller is plastic, and this is what fails on them. There are upgraded parts with metal impellers that a lot better, and will last a lot longer. I would strongly advise against the BMW part. I reckon 50/60 for the uprated part.

    Edit ;
Mines a 4 cylinder so plenty of room to play with .

    Right,

    Picked up car.

the water pump is working but leaking. needs replacing, apparently the price of the part is about the €300 mark. The BMW (53?) I have has a specific water pump which is awkward to get to and (apparently) is more expensive.

There's also a leak under the manifold where there's a bit of T pipework and the join in the T is leaking too (about €60 to replace that part).

    I have a 04 318 E46 auto (the 143bhp model).

As it stands I'm flat broke til the end of the month so it's not going to get done til I get paid. I'll be topping up with water til then.

Does €600 still sound about right?

They're having you on. The water pump costs in and around 50 quid including VAT.

There's a couple of options on that page, the Meyle pump is BMW OEM, so not the uprated one, but to give you an idea the price is £30.

I would go elsewhere being honest.

I think thats called ass raping you that price for just the part alone is crazy do a bit of research and get the average price for the pump...and as said you would get one for 50quid with no bothers.

The price sounds expensive but you only briefly mentioned the manifold issue. Would need more info to give a total price. 600 for pump on own would be crazy

It would have cost you about €350 to get the water pump AND Thermostat AND Serpentine belt & coolant at the main BMW dealer. €600 sounds nuts! Are you sure there's not something else they're doing for you? I'd be rightly peeved if they charged me that extortionate amount & the hand the car back in that state.
