Drive about 6 miles a day commuting through the city. Could get stuck in traffic regularly. Dont really go for any long drives.

Like the look of something like this but need to know from someone with experience will it cost me a fortune just to drive to work. Wont be going for this exact one so dont need comments about this particular car just 318s in general.

its not really about mpg if you spend half the time sitting in traffic.
I know I used to drive from dublin cc to about 10 miles outside the city for work and it used to take an hour with stop start traffic and I was getting 16 mpg in a 2.0 alfa.

10 miles each way? Would only do 3 each way myself. Wouldnt be stuck in traffic all the time just the odd time and for maybe 20 mins if i was. Be more like never getting into 4th kind of driving through city. Traffic lights would be whats stopping me.

Where are you doing city driving and getting into fourth gear?

You'd be lucky to be getting the low 20's doing town driving. The engine will barely be warmed up driving only 3 miles to work. I used to own an E36 Coupe with the 2.5 engine, I loved that car but the fuel consuption was brutal. But at the time I didnt give a damn, it was just a great car.

I'd buy a bicycle if your concerned about mpg. 15 minutes on a bike and it runs on fat :-)

Or even walk it at that distance

Personally, i wouldn't buy the BMW. too hard on fuel and if with a car that year you are looking at yearly NCT tests. If you need to replace various wearing parts the BMW it will break you on repairs.

    Look at something like this,

The Honda will go forever, easy get spares and the 1.8lt engine will be better on petrol than the BMW. The car above will suit the budget based on your link, will have more space & spec and drive well.

Well worth a look provided the car is straight.

Ya The Honda is a grand car, butI think that a lot of people, myself included, want to own and drive a BMW at least once in their life. I had mine for only a year, as that's as long as I really wanted it and sold it on for a 1,500e profit after that time.
I'll probably never own one again as I don't think any of the saloons would be suited to my family needs. But maybe some day I may be able to afford an X5 7 seater.:D:D:):)

Most of the time i actually do cycle.

Its not that im overly concerned and its the be all and end all.

I would just hate to buy a car and realise its a gas guzzler. Is a 2.0 BMW worse on juice than other 2.0s basically.

Wouldnt want the Honda but good point about the repairs.

I would spend much of my central London driving in. 4th at 25-30mph.

Low 20s, or high teens would be the norm with those driving conditions

    I've one
It's doin about 38 mpg on a 25m each way trip " no traffic "
In the city it was very low 20's or even high teen,s with the air con

Op if you are worried about mpg for a six mile commute you are looking at the wrong form of transport.

As said before perhaps a bike would suit your needs.

    This.

I have one as well. On the motorway I'm getting about 35 mpg and driving in and around town I tend to get about 24 mpg (ish).

Ive already said that i cycle most of the time!

All i wanted to know was are they Gas guzzlers. Simple as that. Not looking for alternatives or other form of transport suggestions.

Compared to other 2 litres are they guzzlers?

Most 2 litre petrols will have a drinking problem around town being honest.

But if it's 6 miles I'd buy what you want, 318 is hardly going to bankrupt you. I tend to not commute in my 325, but when I do, I don't really care, the journey is short, just sit back and enjoy the leather seats:D

No, all 2.0 petrols use a certain amount of fuel, none are "light". The BMW would be no worse than any other 2.0.

When I had one I got about 420-450 miles to a full tank with average rural/urban driving.
Motorway driving would be up on 500 miles to the tank.got to 523 one day when it died 1 mile from the petrol station at Kill on the N7.
It was a 1.9 engine though although year was also 00.
