Tips for Skype interview?

I would like any advice from people who have had skype interviews....I have a 40 min interview for a job next week (my dream job!) and the fact that its via skype is making me more nervous than usual :(

It just seems like it will be harder to make a good first impression than a traditional interview, any tips?!

It was also stated that no preparation is needed for the interview, that is a more about discussing my suitability and getting to know me...

This is very different from any other interviews I have done, and the fact that its my perfect job is making me more nervous!

Have people found skype interviews easier/harder than normal ones?!

Btw the job is a psychology project worker

    Thanks!

TBH I would do the same preparation that you would do for a face to face interview. During the interview try to speak clearly and maybe a little slower than you normally do in case the quality of the connection is bad. I have been on video conferencing with high quality Polycom systems where you couldn't hear people properly.

Test your system and microphone and ensure they are working properly well before the interview as well.

I find you have to concentrate a lot more on interviews or presentations where you are not present and I find the fact that you can't really read the body language as well a bit disconcerting.

Good luck with the interview :)

    • Take the opportunity to make yourself comfortable but professional, choose a seat that you'll be happy in for the duration.
    • Make sure that the background is neutral or advantageous - interviewers wont appreciate seeing mess or activity (or worse) behind someone, skype a freind to check.
    • If you're on wifi make sure to be in the best reception spot.
    • If you're using or taking notes make sure you can reach them.
    • Same for a glass of water, I don't normally touch the water in a face to face but I'll get through a pint an hour on skype.
    • Ensure that you are ready to go at the designated time, these things tend to be much more punctual than traditional meetings.

    Best of luck.

I have never had a skype interview but use it quite a bit, one recurring problem that seems to pop up is feedback across the call, especially on laptops where the mic can be built in quite close to the speakers, if using the laptop it might help to take some time and check your mic/speaker settings, or buy a cheap external mic which might help if you have this problem.

As for the interview, just try to relax, it's easier said than done but try not to put too much onus on how desirable the job is and treat it like a task with a goal at the end.

Best of luck with the interview.

Is it video or just phone?

Look at the camera, not the screen! Otherwise you wont be making eye contact

Thanks for the tips guys, very much appreciated :) I presume skype would mean its a video call rather than a phone call. Have the weekend to prepare so hopefully it'll go ok!

    Thanks!
