On June 4, 2012 the Libyan Abu Yahya Al-Libi, Al-Qaeda No. 2 was killed by the US. He took over that slot after Ayman Zahawiri became No. 1 after the late Osama Bin Laden was also killed by the U.S last year.

On September 11, 2012 Zahawiri announced the death of Al-Libi in a tape made during last month's Ramadan calling for his followers to avenge his deputies death.

The film "Innocence of Muslims" initially an obscure youtube movie was broadcast on a Egyptian Salafist television channel stoking up Muslim hysteria. The Jewish filmmaker turns out to be an actually an Egyptian.

Then a mob including gunmen and others armed with RPG's attacked the residence of the U.S. Ambassador - they knew where he was staying and his movements and knew he was in Benghazi rather than Tripoli and knew he was lightly protected.

Mohammad Zawahiri – Ayman Zawahiri’s brother, supposedly a moderate despite telling anyone who will listen that his Al-Qaeda was released from prison by Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi. He led the mob which attacked the U.S. embassy in Cairo on the anniversary of 9/11.

Clearly this was a well planned attack on the US ambassador and had nothing to do with spontaneous anger at America over a stupid internet movie.

However the American media have fallen for it hook line and sinker and any condemnation of the killing of the US ambassador is now qualified by an apology for offending Muslims.

The killing was a clearly an "Al-Qaeda" operation in revenge for Al-Libi.
Nothing to do with the film although there was also a minor film protest going on in parallel.
For some reason the the northeast of Libya, especially around the town of Derna, has long been a home for jihadists, many of whom travelled to Iraq to fight the US military or become suicide bombers. Derna has the reputation of being the most pious Muslim city in Libya

Newsweek article(2008) on Libya suicide bombers in Iraq and the mystery of Derna (six pages)
What drove so many Libyans to volunteer as suicide bombers for the war in Iraq? A visit to their hometown—the dead-end city of Darnah.

As to what the current strength of this Libyan "Al-Qaeda" affiliate unit it international links and support from general population is unclear at this stage. I would imagine we are going to see a low intensity civil war in parts of north-east Libya, As the New government begins to restore law and order and disarm and liquidate these elements.

It's not about me - it's about media. The same media which throwing red herring with Brits killed in France and stupid youtube movie. Do people really mind Al-Qaeda as its most colorful hero is gone already? Does anyone want to read 6 pages of article in dailybeast, which will be useless anyway if you do not have deeper knowledge of political and social scene in this countries?
