Broken collar bone...

    ...dammit!!

Had a motorbike crash yesterday, broke my collarbone in 4 places. I'm pretty active with boxing, weights, convict conditioning, sledgehammer training etc., so my question is (to anyone who may have had a similar situation) is that the end of my training or do ye reckon that once it heals I should be able to get back into it?

    Cheers.

Maybe go to see a physiotherapist ,they'll be able to get you in much better running shape and can give you tips on how to make it heal faster and make it less prone to breaking again.

Your doctor will know more. Impossible to tell as everyone is different, so depends how bad the breaks are, your age, did you need surgery? Any pins or screws inserted?

Usually around 3-4 months for a 'normal' fracture but as I said everyone is different.

How much displacement? Do you need surgery?

I had plate put in mine May 2011, did a lot of physio, and I was back competing in judo in Feb 2012. It was structurally OK, but still hurt a lot and my range of motion wasn't great. Kept going for a while and then my neck/shoulder packed in - most likely a knock on effect from the break.

Had to do more physio again, but now I think I have almost complete range of motion, and much less pain. I haven't been back to judo since the second round of physio (classes were shut for August, and then I was just too busy), but I did a few BJJ sessions and didn't have any problems.

Supposedly a "normal" collarbone fracture takes about 8 weeks to heal. That said everyone I know who got that kind of fracture and was told to wait 8 weeks re-broke it when they went back training. That's two people though so probably not a statistically significant sample.

Thanks lads. I'm 41, there was no surgery so no pins or anything. They said it was four "splintered" breaks but not bad enough to require surgery. I have to go back to the hospital next Friday and they'll have a look to see how it's healing. So normally 8 weeks then? Fingers crossed that's all it'll be. :(

You won't know until you talk to the orthopaedic surgeon. The A&E doctors aren't really qualified to decide if you need surgery. When I did mine they were going to send me on my way with a few codeine, then decided to be safe maybe I should see the surgeon in two days. He took one look at the x-rays and told me he wanted to operate that day.

Sorry, I'm probably only freaking you out here.

I've always been told a fracture in an adult may take up to 4 months to heal. Teenagers 6-8weeks and children even less.

I'd be wary about going back too early and rushing in to anything. The worst thing you could do is go back to early and possibly do more damage. Take everything your doctor says and listen to him. I've a friend who went back to play a football match 2 weeks before he was supposed to and he broke it again in the same place but broke it even worse which required surgery. I'd play on the side of caution if I was you as you seem to be a very active person especially with your boxing and weights sessions.

Well currently I have a leg brace on after surgery two days ago on my meniscus which was much worse than the initial MRI showed. Had to remove nearly half of my lateral meniscus as the surgeon told me- "It was completely shredded and couldn't be repaired" 6 weeks in a knee brace at the moment. Now that's fun times ahead! I hate sitting around more than anything!

    Get well soon!

PMSL. I just rooted out my Jurassic Park boxset, Alien boxset and a Star Trek "Borg" boxset. I'm set for a couple of days! Oh, and the MotoGP is on this weekend, so that'll help! :D
