Have a built in saorview in my tv,and lately the picture just freezes or breaks up or goes altoghter then returns perfect in a few seconds,What could be the cause of this,At the moment i am also receiving the old rte signal on the same cabeling system and with out any problems, so need to get this sorted before it is turned off in Oct.

What part of the country are you in? Do you get analogue TV3 or TG4?

Which transmitter does the Saorview coverage checker recommend for your location?

Might sound like a strange question but is it breaking up when it rains by any chance, as mine does, the minute rain comes off we go and breaking up, if its lashing the signal goes altogether:mad::mad:

Rain shouldn't cause problems to a properly weatherproof aerial system, delivering the recommended minimum signal level & quality.

Well as far as I know the aerial is waterproof, it's been up there since April 2011 and is perfect when not raining, wind doesn't affect it at all:confused::(

No it doesn't have to be raining for it to break up.

High pressure atmospheric conditions, tropospheric lift most likely. Long distance TV signals travelling further on the same frequency as you receive your Saorview on interfering with each other. Has always occured but more noticeable now with digital. Indoor or inadequate outdoor installations can be susceptible to interference in these conditions. A good outdoor aerial installation can help reduce/eliminate potential interference.

It was quite bad with me last Friday night from Mullaghanish. Expect to hear more complaints like this in the months ahead.

This great weather we are having is causing some reception problems for a few viewers in various parts of the country. The high pressure that gives us this nice sunny weather is also causing a tropospheric lift. This means that interference signals from other countries, or other Irish transmitters, are travelling further than usual. If a viewer has a good aerial installation, this will not be a problem for them. Viewers experiencing reception difficulties during this high pressure weather, in all likelihood, have a poor aerial installation.

Ian Macdonald Tropo (under certain conditions ) can play havoc with even the best installs. It would be fairer to say that a good installation will miminilise the risk of interference due to tropscopic lift, but not always eliminate it.
Great to have the weather though and not had any tropo related calls here in Cork ( yet)

Saorview Tech & Trade Thank you for your comment Ian. You are absolutely right, even perfectly good installations can, on rare occasions, suffer from a lift. As you pointed out, a good installation minimises the risk. Thankfully the vast majority of our viewers have excellent reliable reception and are completely unaware of the current propogational anomalies. Enjoy the good weather!

Poor reception on RTE would suggest that you don't have a VHF aerial. Do you have an outdoor aerial & was your aerial installation done recently just to get Saorview?

We just got our Saorview TV today and it's very glitchy.

Any truth in the rumours that it was all unapproved boxes that had the problems?

Where did that rumour come from?

Nothing to do with approval or non-approval: outside of SFN (single frequency network) operation, any receiver will see a co-channel signal as noise & once this is at a high enough level, the wanted signal can no longer be decoded.

You are mis reading my question, For Clarification What i'm saying is i have a very GOOD RTE reception and a very poor TV3/TG4 reception on the old system.

    Hoover,

Please answer the earlier qn. Which transmitter does the coverage checker recommend? There are lots of transmitters in Wicklow and it may not be that Kippure is recommended.

Generally for good Saorview you need to be getting TG4 and TV3 analogue OK. You say that you cannot get TG4 and TV3 analogue OK. That suggests your aerial system is not working well enough to decode Saorview properly.

So have a look at the website liked to and see what it recommends. Let us know what it says, and how many miles away you are. Then you need the right aerial, pointed the right way.

Right then, if it is Kippure you get your analogue signal from, then you probably have a VHF aerial & no UHF. Saorview is UHF.
