.308 Rifle Project

When getting into FTR I sold my .223 to fund equipment and the build. Ever since then I have been missing a hunting rifle to just throw over my shoulder and go for a walk. I can do this with the FTR rig but with a 31" barrel and the extra weight things can get awkward and tiring fairly quickly. The only thing I love about the FTR is I know it inside out and know how it is going to perform at different distances.

For the past 2-3 months I have been looking at different calibres. For example: .204, .223, .22-250, .243, 6.5x47 & .308. I couldn't settle on a calibre as I wanted something that would do everything. The .243 stood out for this job but then went back to the .308 as I have everything for it already, cleaning rods, etc.
Also with the .308 it has cheap ammo for messing around on the range.

This will be an attempt at a duel rifle to a degree. It will be used for hunting and also for target shooting out to 600-800 yards.

Last week I started the hunt for parts.
So far I have a Remington action from Fergal White, Ezridax's barrel, Timney trigger off Dave Mulvihill and hopefully a stock off Fish Slapped (that he is screwing me over with :p).
What I need to get now is a magazine kit, trigger guard and a picatinny rail.

I have decided to go with a 26" barrel as I won't be using a moderator. Also for the time being I will use my Sightron scope until I gather enough money to buy something for it.

I will be dropping in my application tomorrow or Friday to my FO so hopefully things won't take to long.

I will keep the thread updated from start to finish where I will be testing from 100-300 yards.

Also if anyone knows where I could find a mag kit (ADL I think but will update tomorrow) and a trigger guard for a Remington 700 let me know.

Hey dev, would you not be tempted to go with a shorter barrel and throw on a light mod. Keep the balance the same but with the added benefit of reduced recoil and noise?

Do you have a total weight in mind? Does the build have to be usable in standing, kneeling and sitting positions or is it a mainly prone type build you're going for?

Would be interested in your take on those.

I won't be using a mod hence the reason for the 26" barrel. I very used to the .308 recoil now and I wouldn't even notice it. Most of my shooting is bog land and away from houses so noise shouldn't be a problem. I always shoot with ear plug in anyway.

I have no weight in mind. I am just throwing parts together and I'll see what it comes out at the end. I'm used to dragging the FTR rig around and at 14lbs I don't notice it to much with the studs on the side.

Most of my hunting shots are usually prone but if I can't get the shot prone it is usually sitting or kneeling. If standing shots have to be taken I usually try to find something to lean on or it is a quick shot, Rifle raised onto shoulder and the crosshairs brought down onto the target and trigger pulled. Any longer and my arms will fatigue and won't hold on target.

I was considering one of these bottom metals before picking up an AICS..

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-REMINGTON-700-DBM-TRIGGER-GUARD-FLOORPLATE-ACCEPTS-ALL-AICS-AND-AI-MAGS-/160868570318?pt=UK_SportingGoods_Hunting_ShootingSports_ET&hash=item25748394ce#ht_500wt_1203

Not sure if they're the same quality as others on the market (Badger Ordnance, etc..), but they look the part.

    Dev
Blackburn Gun Metal was bought-out and is now part of Swift, top of the line metal.

    Good luck with your project.

I picked up the stock for the rifle tonight.

    Here is the initial pictures:

I will be sanding it down tomorrow to get off what appears to be 2-3 coats of paint off. There is 3-4 dings that will be filled.

I'm not sure what colour to go with or if I should try doing a camo effect on it.

Received letter from Super saying they have my application.

From previous applications I had the grant letter a short time after I received this letter. Fingers crossed.

Letter is dated 19/09/2012 meaning my application was received by the Super two days after I handed it in to my local station.
