I'm surprised there's so many events in September but am happy to see it

First event that stands out for me in the Modern Pentathlon Youth Championships. I wonder if that means athletes under 18?
I'll have a look on the site...

Great work, as always, Dan man. This will be a very useful way to track our Athletes' progress on the long road to Rio.

Hopefully we can all 'chip in' with news and updates as the thread develops.

Thanks, I think there are other events in September that I haven't gotten round to posting yet....there are definitely weekly tennis, badminton and cycling tours that I have missed out but I'm trying to focus on the bigger events until the thread becomes a bit more established.

Arthur Lanigan O'Keeffe who competed at the Olympics in London won a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships in Modern Pentathlon just last week in Poland. Amazing result....he was actually leading going into the final event, the combined shoot and run.
The Youth Championships will be for those aged 18 and under. I don't think the riding element is included at youth level.

You'd think so but no....it's still referred to as the Modern Pentathlon. It's just the same as the seniors where you might remember there is no riding in the qualification rounds either at major events such as World Cups.
Modern Tetrathlons involve the same events as Modern Pentathlon minus the fencing which isn't the case for the World Youths.

I was on the site but never looked up the results of the Junior event...:o

Chris Bryan finished 34th in the Open Water earlier this week in Italy.
He hasn't fully recovered from the shingles.
After just missing out in qualifying for the Olympics he kept up the training just in case he got a late call up. He took part in a few open water events over the summer.

The aim is that this thread will be used mainly for users to keep updated on sporting action each month. Users can post details of events that haven't been included on the list....though I must point out it's still in progress.
I think it will be a good idea if we opened a separate thread to discuss results of these events and Irish performances.

As for Sochi 2014, I'll try and give it some sort of build up but as Irish participation will be limited it will be a slow burner. Other users can move things along if they need.

Cross Country is a former Olympic event. The legendary Flying Finn, Paavo Nurmi won both individual and team Gold in Paris, two of his five Golds at those Games.
That was the last Olympic Cross Country.

Maybe it is considered a Winter event, and too similar to the Marathon. If so, It would be a great addition to the Winter Olympics.

Some interesting events there.

The Showjumping in Olympia is always interesting and a sign that Christmas is just around the corner...:)

It looks like we will have a 'European Olympics' in Azerbaijan in 2015, after the European Olympic Committee voted for a new competition similar to the Asian or Pan-American Games.

The details are still to be decided, but it appears that 15 Olympic Sports will be contested, although it is unlikely that Athletics or Swimming will feature

It seems like a little unnecessary to me. Most, if not all, sports, have well established European and/or World Championship cycles already. This quote would suggest it is more about money than competition

"The National Olympic Committees (NOC) have received assurance that the event will not cost them a penny, but bring financial gains," the EOC said.

Having said that, it could give our 2016 hopefuls some good competitive experience in the pre-Olympic year. If the competition goes ahead we should embrace it. Seeing as Pat Hickey (our IOC Delegate) was the driving force behind this project, I'm sure our future Olympians might well be heading to Baku.

Fergale, I just had a look around that website, and they do have a bio for him

Amongst other things, he was a Tipp man and

from 1915-26 he won Irish titles from 880 yards up to 4 miles, and was also Irish cross-country champion three times. In 1925 Ryan had his greatest year, placing second at the International Cross-Country Championship and winning the Berlin International cross-country meet.

JJ sounds like a fine runner.

Interesting website, I must have a more detailed read.
