IT Support Jobs

Hi everyone, apologies if this is in the incorrect forum...

I am a college student who deferred 2 modules which I will be finished with in January. I'm thinking of heading to Australia from February to September and I was wondering if anyone had any advice to give on this or if anyone has done something similar?

By January, I will have 4 years experience in IT support including a 7 month internship with a Multinational software company. I was wondering if Helpdesk support jobs would be easy to comeby over there or would I be better getting a job on a farm? (grew up on one)

Thanks in advance for any comments, suggestions or advice

Based on your experience I don't think you will have trouble finding helpdesk or desktop support work, but that really depends on where you are heading for. Also keep in mind if you are coming out on a working holiday visa, it might go against you because you can only for the same employer for 6 months. A lot of WHVs are having trouble finding work these days due to visa restrictions.

The majority of IT roles would be based in Sydney or Melbourne. I have mates who have very decent IT experience that had great difficultly trying to get IT work in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. They ended up coming back to Sydney to get work. Perth is apparently alright for work too for specialist roles.

What I will say is there is a good bit of emphasis on certification down here, particularly in support roles. Having a Microsoft of Cisco certification will greatly improve your chances. Maybe spend the next 3 months doing a CCNA if you can?.

I don't think you'll have any issues finding contract work in Sydney - I've heard a few people that have found similar roles within a few weeks of arriving. Should be looking at around $30/hr I would think

IT jobs in Perth are all over the place.
I have no qualifications but a decent amount of years behind me in a variety of multinationals... and I've had no problems at all finding IT work.

$30-$40 p/hr is probably the going rate for deskside support or some deployment stuff.

Deployments are quite good if you're on a WHV because they usually pay decent and they're always about 3 month long projects which is usually what a WHV'r prefers.

Thanks very much for all your replies. I was wondering, in your experiences, is it possible to line a job up before heading over? Going over would be a bit of a gamble for me but would be worth it if I got work.

I managed to get my job from home though it was really a case of being in the right place at the right time. Unless you have some really niche skill set I think it would be very difficult to be honest mate.

I had a decent permanent job at home and I also had a bit of debt coming down. I was offered just temporary contract in Oz, so I was taking a risk myself. That was 2 years ago, debt is gone and now am sponsored. I don't
for a minute regret the decision to move.

Nothing ventured nothing gained and all that. I reckon give it a go.
IT jobs are plentiful, you will definitely swing something
