Nice try Sony, but for a price that ridiculous I'd at least expect some sort of viewfinder

Still a big announcement though. I don't expect it'll sell in huge numbers but once those prices start to come down it'll be the end for APS-C.

The best thing about this is that it'll force Canon and Nikon to respond. Mirrorless is already eating into their market share (especially in Japan). We might finally see affordable FF entry-level DSLRs in the next couple of years.

Good news, if you ask me.

This is just Sony dipping their toe in the water of this segment (a segment that doesn't even really exist yet). Sure the price is high, but as DP Review pointed out, the whole camera costs less than just a Leica Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH lens on its own (not including a Leica body to go with it). It's not going to sell millions, but it's a statement of intent, and lays down a challenge to everyone else. This is what flagships are all about - be the best in your field, get people talking, and hopefully benefit from the trickle down effect in the more crowded spaces below. This announcement might help sell more RX100 s.

And there'll be both optical and EVF viewfinders available for it, to suit both tastes.

More important from a market point of view are the announcements of the A99 full frame SLT, and the Nex6 APS-C mirrorless. Sony are finally starting to shore up some of the gaps in their lineup.

Sony have a choice, to play catchup with Canon and Nikon, or to do their own thing. Their own thing is looking pretty interesting at the moment.
