Afraid not. This course is not eligible for world record recognition. It's downhill.

Josh Harris is making a genuine attempt at the Beer Mile Record on Saturday in Melbourne. His previous 5.02 was not accepted (5.09 official record) but he reckons he is back in WR shape.

    He's in great form

Beer 2 Mile here. 8 laps 8 beers in 13:10 plus penalty lap to bring it to 14:27! Sick.

He puked 3 times, so should of been 3 extra laps and not 1?

Not sure of the rules but probably a grey area. All the pukes were basically together within 5 metres of each other so would be harsh to penalise him 3 times for that.

Hmm for the single beermile its max 1 lap definitely, puke as much as ya like!

I thought it'd be ok to resurrect this thread.

Patrick Makau runs in Frankfurt on Sunday.
    1. He has something to prove after being omitted from Kenya's Olympic team
    2. The course record is 2:03:42 by Wilson Kipsang, so the course is blisteringly fast

So, record to go this weekend or not?

If he breaks 2.05 Id be surprised. It will be interesting to see how well he runs given the negative publicity that he has had this week with the german journalist interview.

I've a suspicion that the fast Boston times of 2011, and Makau's and Kipsang's incredible 2:03 marathons last year have mistakenly got people thinking that low 2:03s are the logical progression. I think we should remember that there have only been three legal, and five in total, sub 2:04 times ever. Haile's 2:03:59 2008 time did not open the floodgates. 2:03:xx marathons will and will always be an absolute rarity.

Also, Makau got taken to the cleaners by Kipsang in London this April before dropping out.

No world record. 2:06:10. Makau looked like he was struggling from about halfway with a right quad or hamstring, he was 10 metres back from the pacers at one stage. A fantastic win and time, if he was carrying an injury. I couldn't make head nor tail of the German commentary, but from what I could make out, they went through halfway in about 62:45 or 63, a minute behind schedule. The coverage was rubbish.

I read an interesting article over the last couple of days, where Makau reckons the lowest possible time that he could run would be 2:03:10. He reckons no ordinary human is capable of running sub 2:03. I've always been of the opinion that the whole sub-2 only being a matter of time is complete nonsense. Haile Geb, rated by many as the greatest long distance athlete of all time, took the traditional route from the track to the road and got to 2:03:59. Kipsang and Makau went to the road earlier and got 2:03:40. A whole host of others; Mosop, G Mutai, Kebede, etc, etc. have gotton to 2:04. Some of these guys haven't even gotton under 60 minutes for the half marathon.

I think we should accept that a 2:03 marathon is the absolute pinnacle and close to the limit of human achievement. I still watch in amazement when somebody runs a 2:04 or 2:05. We should not expect WRs in the marathon very often. If this current golden era is struggling to get under 2:04, then this must represent close to the limit.

I'd considered putting this in a new thread, but constant questions of when a sub 2 marathon is going to happen annoy me, so I'll leave it here.

2-10 seemed to be the absolute limit for years!

i fear that money and drugs have a lot to do with the current times:mad:

According to the IAAF website, the temp at the finish in Frankfurt was only 2 degrees. 2:06 in those conditions seems a great time.

Windchill was a factor too - it was fairly breezy out on the course. It could've been worse though - it snowed yesterday morning in Frankfurt. I watched most of the race in the Festhalle - the organizers put on a great show. The noise in the arena was deafening when Makau and Melkamu finished, and also when the leading German runners arrived. The indoor finish lends itself to a great atmosphere, with fireworks, big screens, confetti, loud music, cheerleaders and 7000 supporters etc. I'll try to run it next year if I can get there in one piece.
