    Hi Rob,

Sundays training starts at 12noon-2.30 and costs 12.50euro per class
    - the hall is located in the school across from the Bell pub in Blanch village.

Tuesdays training starts at 8pm and costs 10euro per class.

However the first class you attend will be free. You don't need to bring anything with you as we all have gloves, pads, sticks and knives to use but if you have your own, please feel free to bring them along.

    Hope this helps
    Kathleen

Sounds good kathleen, an is it optional to do both classes each week?

Sounds like a good price liam however ive done some research and inosanto Kali seems to be the best, ie incorporates the most styles, do you guys teach this specific style?

Hi Rob, no we don't teach Insanto Kali, not sure how you generally qualified through research that Inosanto Kali is the best style of FMA thou ? It may be and prob is a very good style and you may feel it's the best, but thats a personal choice and thats ok and cool. But in general there are many styles of Eskrima / Kali / Arnis even in Ireland / UK and many of them are very very good, taught by good people, who have made what they teach very functional.

All styles like Instructors have strengths and Weaknesses. I've train and took part in light and full contact training, over the past 25 odd years and hosted seminars and trained with many great teachers like Guru Felix Valencia, Guru Cass Magda and Guru Marc Denny to name a few and they all top notch International teachers who all teach very good FMA in different ways. I've yet to see any where one style, which can beat all others. Each person journey will be unique in FMA in the same way each style is unique to FMA, each offering something positive in some way.

I wish you the very best with your journey in your training in FMA, maybe have a look at some of the JKD guys I'm pretty sure they maybe able to help you in your search. Liam

Thanks liam, I mean it seems to incorporate the most styles though. Where are you guys based anyway and whats your pricing? Also have you weights etc too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 437 ✭✭silat liam

Hi rob no worries man. We just have classes sorry no gym / weights and are based in Lucan, Firhouse and Walkinstown, beside the Luas stop at Kylemore. You can do 8 classes for €80 or train in unlimited classes for €65 each month. If you need any more info you can check out my links or PM. I glad you having an interest in FMA and have a look around as there are some good teachers in Dublin, and I'm sure you find what you are looking for.

There's a few, but you should train with Na Fianna Finn, they're a sound bunch and they teach Inosanto-Lacoste blend as well as Giron arnis which has about 20 different styles, so that could just be the best system of all according to your research.

Wild geese and valencia lameco have already been mentioned. There's other groups but they probably don't incorporate enough styles or they train with keyboards :pac:

    Hi Rob

I think the problem you are running into is probably the statements you made at the start. One of the things newbee's have in their head when they start learning South East Asian styles is that they believe, these styles can be learnt quickly and you can learn many. This is not help when you see students suddenly over night becoming qualified as Instructors or Guru's, or by Instructors who seem to add styles they teach like seasons in the sun.

It's not so important Rob to feel the need to learn many styles, but instead learn to Master one, and I mean really Master it. I teach full time and I'm dealing with Joe public everyday and I can say 99% of them have enough issues with time, work, family, and training time to learn one art / style alone without flying around trying to learn 6 or 7 styles.People like Guru Dan Inosanto are exceptions to the rule not the general. The reason's you see some Instructors advertising like this is simply marketing in a ego way, look we do 10 styles of this art, we better than the guys who do 9 styles. For me my responsibility as a teacher is to help develop my student to the best of my ability, not confused in a myriad of conflicting info. Maybe there teachers who believe they can teach that, fair enough, but there is a saying and I think Bruce Lee quoted it " I don't fear the man who know 10000 techniques, but the man who train a technique 10000 times"

Rob this is what I hope might help you in your search to find a teacher
    a) someone you like training under and you feel comfortable with
    b) an environment / fellow students where you can successfully grow, achieved and have fun in.
    c) a style or form of progressive training you love doing
    d) a club where you can afford to train
    e) an instructor who goal and focus is you, not your pocket.

There maybe a few other things, but you get the jist of what I'm saying. Have a look around as said before if inosanto is what you're after maybe look into the JKD Guys or maybe broaden you're scope into other areas of FMA you may find a teacher, style or club you really like and will enjoy training in. Glad you're developing an interest in these arts and im very sure you will find a teacher who will suit your needs.

Thanks for the input liam. I have been posting on my phone until now so hopefully i can clarify some things.

From the reading online ive done people seem to regard the inosanto blend of kali as being highly efficent as it appears to use many different styles of kali mixed together to form an efficent style. Its not that i want to learn 10 different kinds of kali. I want to master one and from reading online i was under the impression that inosanto was just one style. Now that may not be the case but im going on very limited knowledge here, im essentially looking for guidance here. What i want to achieve is as I said to master whatever art I start, I want to be confident quick and efficent with it mainly from a self defence point of view. I was considering krav maga until I found that generally all thats offered is 12 week courses which i dont believe will teach me anything useful should I ever be in a "fight for my life situation" Ive been looking at Na Fianna Finns site and the kali/silat they teach (going by the videos) seems to be what ive been looking for. But as youve said I want a teacher who wants to do his best to make me the best I can be, not just keep the money coming. So far liam youve been the main contributer here which has been leaning me towards maybe going with you for a class or two to see how we get on. So would you like to continue this in Pms and maybe I can get some more info on your styles, prices etc?

Maelstromd5, don't throw personal insults around like that.

Also don't open up old threads if you have nothing to add to them.

I'm going to close this one, as it seems to have run its course.
