I recently wrote to a company that a friend works for, sending in a speculative CV.

I know that theyre not hiring at the moment but she tells me there could be some activity in the new year.

Anyway I got a reply saying they liked the look of what I'd sent in and i fitted the profile of the kind of person they might need.

It was an informal enough reply (its an informal workplace) but the guy said I should "keep in touch".

Now I'm wondering the best way to do that without looking like some kind of weirdo?

Tent - outside the main entrance.

Joking aside occasional (maybe once a month) email just touching base. You've a friend there so ask them to keep an ear to the ground if they hear something send a specific e-mail.

Try and find out if the guy who said "keep in touch", has a twitter account. If he decides he needs someone in your field, he might 'tweet' it. Also, if you follow him on twitter he might follow you back. If you tweet the odd work/field related tweet, it will remind him you are there and in the right field.

If he doesn't, see if the company themselves have a twitter feed. Twitter is incredibly useful, its just mis-used by most people.

Is he on Linkedin? Would probably be a handy way to keep in touch on a professional level.

OP Follow him on twitter, LinkedIn, fried him of Facebook, e-mail regally and write the occasional hand written letter. He wont for one second think you're crazy.

I'm only kidding of course - all great suggestions I wouldn't do all of them though obviously :D

I'd send him a thank you card / note. A lot of places don't even bother to read CV's let alone reply. A hand written note or card could make you stand out from other's.

It's deemed old fashioned now, but it is something different.

Don't contact him out of the blue gain would be my opinion. Time it right by using twitter if he has one and if he uses it for that kind of stuff, but use your pal to keep his ear to the ground. You're next contact Gould be perfectly timed and ideal for him.
