I am driving an 04 golf and it has wind up windows. I am wondering how difficult it would be to put in electric windows or if it can even be done?

It is probably less hassle to change to 04 Golf that has them!

A mate of mine had a mid 90s micra a few years ago that had aftermarket electric windows. It looked like nothing more sophisticated than a motor jn a case bolted to the spindle that the winder handle was taken off attached to the door card

Yea, its just that I love the car an would be very difficult to find another one as good. so its basically not worth my while..?? by the sounds of things it would cost a couple of thousand? time isn't an issue.. that wouldn't be a problem

When I put in electric mirrors in the Bravo the wiring was all there, plugged in and away I went. Same with the foglight :)

It more than likely will plug in, maybe need a relay somewhere in the system.

Surely VW would be the same with wiring, it's cheaper to make all the looms the same. They couldn't be that mean...

Not sure if the OP is referring to a MarkIV or a MarkV (if I recall, the V went on sale here in 2004, having been launched in late 03), but I bought a MarkIV new in 2002 - the basic spec then had windey windows and steel wheels. The next spec up had *drumroll* front e/w. I bought a Highline which had all round e/w and decent alloys.

A look on google suggest a Mk4 would require a donor loom, and is a dash out job to get the wiring sorted properly.

Not plug and play? How awful

I think 1000's of Renault and Rover SD1/RRC owners would happiply trade for winders!

Less electrics,so less to go wrong...would be my way of thinking.

My 1990 BMW had just wind up windows so I got the BMW electric window switches put in by a garage, done all in the one afternoon -relatively simple they said as well - was quite pricey though around 400e

Car came with Electric sunroof, mirrors onboard "computer" leather, wood trim etc but no elec windows!!

Only VW could get away with removing electric windows and calling it a "special edition".

I remember fitting something like this kit about 20 years ago, pretty good quality it was too, outlasted the car.

Don't know about this kit but it is cheap and cheerful: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Van-Universal-Electric-Power-Window-Conversion-Kit-/140450035140?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item20b37975c4

If you check it out further you might find that the wiring is already there.

I know someone who had a VW Sharan and wanted to fit cruise control. All he had to do was fit the column stalk from a higher spec car. Everything else that was required was already built in.

Similarly, I had a base model focus with no remote stereo controls. I got one secondhand and was surprised to see that the multi-plug was taped up behind the steering column. All I'd to do was plug it in.
