    its finally happened

Dredd which i have been waiting to see is only been shown in 3D in all three of the limerick cinemas ,Omniplex confirm that the 2d version is only on limited release.

Now I can see 3D perfectly just gives me an awful headache and feel fairly crap after a viewing. I am also aware of few ppl who actually cannot see the 3D image its still just a blur.

So anyone know the nearest cinema to me with a 2D version .

Not sure if the film industry realises how 3D can hurt a film. I wanted to see Dredd this weekend but my mates had to go a certain night and only 3D available then. So i skipped the film and will download it in a few months.

If it had been widely available in 2D i would've been happy to pay my €10 but as it stands i simply will not go to see any 3D film at all, much rather wait for download or blu ray.

Im about the same distance from sligo, castlebar, roscommon and carrick-on-shannon cinemas and for tonight the dredd showings are

Roscommon don't have dredd at all

Carrick have one showing in 2d at 09.15

Castlebar have two showings at 07.05 and 09.15 both 3d

Sligo have one showing at 09.30 in 2d

So looking at that cinemas around me at least seem to be going the 2d route for this. I was more annoyed at the amount of times it was shown. I thought dredd would be more popular.

im hoping theyll do a thor on it.

that was mainly 3D when it came out too and popularity got the 2D version upped to more screening the next week.

with a bit of luck dredd will do well enough to prompt more than just one fecking 2D in cineword (all ive been able to see so far as the option in dublin)

There were over 40 screenings of Dredd in Dublin on Saturday. And only 1 was in 2D. Despite being a massive Dredd/2000AD fan if that 2D showing wasn't available I'd not have bothered. FWIW the 2D screening was pretty jammed - not full but a very good crowd for an 18 cert on a sunny Saturday evening.

This must be down to the distributers alright. Only a single showing every day in Cineworld in town which generally has a good few 2d showings of a new film on release.

Dredd is definitely worth seeing in 3D if it doesn't hurt your eyes or whatever imo, really adds depth to some very good visuals

I think with Dredd its been touted as a 3D film from the beginning and it was shot that way so I dont mind it so much, its post production 3D thats guff. so far this year I've seen Wrath of the Titans (pants 3D) Prometheus (good 3D) and will see Dredd sicne I've no choice but i'm not put off by it.

Cinemaworld in Douglas show all films in 2D, which more to do with the owner refusing to spend any money on the place then anything else.

Saw Dredd there myself in 2D.

I'm gonna be shot here but with Dredd, I have to say 3D was (marginally) the better experience. There are a couple of scenes that just don't have the same impact in 2D. This is the only film I have thought this about so far but who knows, maybe when as more directors & cinematographers gain experience in and begin to really consider how to wield the technology to tell and enhance their stories in ways and from perspectives they couldn't before, we might get more scenes like those.

To be fair, forcing cinemas to split their customer base into two separate showings of the same film just wasn't sustainable. I'm surprised cinemas have put up with it as long as they have.

What should happen from here on out is that 3D fees are dropped and people have the option of wearing 2D or 3D glasses. Still a compromise for those who don't want to watch 3D films but at least you get to see them :p

There's quite a few films coming out digital only as well, and not just 3D films, so I expect in another year or two that 35mm will have quickly faded away so that there'll only be an extremely limited release, if any, on 35mm of some films.
