The final should be on a Sunday and not a Saturday.

heh - have you tried hurling under lights ? totally different game - depth perception is greatly altered - and why would any team who train all summer in daylight want to switch to a late fixture ? as for the fans - try getting from Dublin to connemara or west cork / kerry / donegal after a match.

This, plus an awful lot more people work saturdays than sundays.

Ya. The replay Galway v Kerry in '00 lacked something I felt because it was on a Saturday. Maybe it's because there's less a sense of occasion going through Dublin on a shopping day?

no, just flat out no. Its not some coprorate junkie event to make the most out of advertising, even if it is infiltrating it a lot these days. The biggest day for a GAA final, in any country, county or club is Sunday afternoon, always has been, always will be.

You ain't having much luck here Devlin :D

A lot of good points....the best one being (which I agree with) "no, just no"

The Galway - Kerry replay in '00 was on a Saturday and was deemed a failure from an organisational point of view. The city was clogged up with traffic and many people missed the beginning of the game.

Kerry winning it annoyed a lot of people including myself as well.

People bring their kids to it, for one.

Because people want to have enough time for plenty of pints before Coppers on a Saturday night and the match would cut into drinking time;);););)

Serious answer - why would you change something that has worked fine for hundreds of years??? This is GAA - not any other sport.

There is just something about going to 11 mass on a Sunday, coming home to the smell of roast beef (even tho I dont eat meat anymore), wolfing down the dinner in time for the minor, sitting down and watching the all ireland (with a cup of tea between the 2 games and at HT in the senior). Then having the post-mortem, a nap and be ready for the sunday game as fresh as a daisy.

Or on the 4 occasions Offaly have featured in my lifetime, going to 8:30 mass (praying extra hard for the win), grabbing the food and heading to the game.

Even to this day I go home for the all ireland!! some things you just shouldnt mess with!!

Shane O'Sullivan lamped a Tip lad in the back of the head in a floodlit league match a while ago while the ball was still ages away. He just ran up behind him from a few yards back and swung. Said he was blinded by the lights and got confused where the ball was. I'd probably believe him too. If he was trying to do him he'd surely have waited for the ball to at least try and get away with it and he just stood there bewildered after it happened.

I don't go to mass anymore but if you like, you can go for me and I'll have your roast beef !

    Everyone's a winner :D

the all ireland senior final should never need the gimmick of floodlights, good idea but not for this

An All Ireland under lights would be an abomination.

And it's All Ireland Sunday, not Saturday.

I'd agree with all of the above...

The evening matches are great for the league and for the qualifiers. Lovely to go out on a Saturday evening to a match...

But the All Ireland is not just a match - It's a massive occasion - A whole day out.

People have there own routines whatever they like to do in the afternoon - Go to mass, head into see the minor match, ate a few sandwiches out of the boot of a VW Passat, drink a few pints - Whatever your thing is......... But heading up at 8 o clock on a Saturday night just wouldn't be the same.

Nor would heading home at midnight. It's a crazy idea. The All Ireland Final is a tradition at this stage that you wouldn't change.

Yeah I think the introduction of Saturday games for the qualifiers has been great and has added a new dimension to the whole thing. But there's no reason whatsoever to change the final from a Sunday. Sunday has always been king in the GAA. At a guess I'd say 95% of county championship finals still take place on a Sunday.

But the All Ireland is not just a match - It's a massive occasion - A whole day out.

That's exactly it. I remember going to that Galway v Kerry final in 2000. Like another poster mentioned a lot of people got into the ground late due to congestion, I missed the first 7 or 8 minutes myself, and there was a strangely subdued atmosphere. It kinda lacked that sense of occasion.

Floodlights are fine for football but NOT for hurling

The first Saturday in September doesn't have the same ring to it.

The drive up to and out of Dublin in relaxed Sunday traffic would be a different story on Saturday.
