Recover Hard Drive

Hi, I have an external HD with a lot of data saved on it. I recently plugged it into my MacBook and before I knew it I was doing a backup with time machine. It wiped all the data that was previously stored on the HD. I am now trying to recover the data from the HD. I have Get Data Back installed on a Windows 7 PC. I have now connected the HD to the Windows 7 PC but when I try and find the HD it does not appear. I can go into disk management and see the drive but it does not have an assigned drive letter and is saying the disk needs to be initialized. If I try to initialize the HD I get a message saying "The device is not ready". Does anyone know how I can get this disk online so I can run Get Data Back to recover the data or is there something else I need to get this working? Thanks in advance guys. :)

So the ext HD is used for your Mac? Can the Mac see it?
Did you try googling for sw for mac data recovery?
    Disk drill seems popular.

What file system is the drive using? also try TestDisk and PhotoREC

Was able to connect it to the Mac and now able to see the drive. I've downloaded Disk Drill and I'm currently running a scan. Fingers crossed it will find what I'm looking for. Do Mac's only read FAT 32 drives? I will let you know how I get on.

Its probably in Apple HFS format, you'll need to run testdisk/photorec with this option. Make sure not to write any more data to the actual drive obviously. Both these programs have Mac OS versions, not familiar with disk Drill

I mistakenly deleted a load of data recently but I got it all back with a program called winhex by x-ways software. I have a paid version but they have a free version with less features it may be worth a look. It will work with drive that is has no letter assigned.
