Never liked him anyway :p (joking). In some ways it's good to see a generation that isn't bigoted and pigeon-holed into a sectarian nationality. His perogative, must be a difficult one but appreciate his honesty. He can't help how he feels. I hope this thread doesn't get silly but I think it's somewhat inevitable that it will.

When I saw the title of this thread , I thought it would be about how well he is playing right now !

He is playing fantastic stuff ...... roll on the Ryder Cup

IMO , Golf , like tennis is not an Olympic Sport , so the whole this is not relevant . ( My way of staying well out of this one !! )

Only posted this because I'd thought it would have been of interest. Doesn't bother me if he plays for gb or Ireland. If the guy feels more comfortable for gb at least he's honest about it.

i agree - if he feels more british (and hes entitled to) then he should be left alone to play for team GB with recriminations

however, what about him representing Ireland again in team golf ???

should the place in world cup team etc not go to someone with more of an affinity to Ireland?

Nothing new there really. Always knew he considered himself British. Never supported him as such, in the same way that I would follow padraig. Also thought there was a substantial touch of arrogance about the guy but maybe that is something that is required to be world number one. Tbh Lefty is my all time favourite golfer followed closely by paddy.

Best player in the world by a country mile. He can represent Kazakhstan for all I care but we all know this thread will end up closed after the war of words breaks out.

Based on what exactly, his interviews..the way he carries himself?

Have seen this said on the boards a few times and i struggle to see his arrogance nor have i seen any evidence to back it up. Woudl you care to elaborate on this "arrogance".

Golf in the US is incredibly popular, there are many many Irish/Americans who play and watch golf. what will their reaction be if Rory McIlroy breaks allegiance with the GUI and Ireland? Will he be able to represent Ireland again in the world cup of golf if he represents britain in the Olympics? its a tough call for him but he has the talent and game to play well regardless of peoples opinion of him. For that reason alone, I dislike the chap. he seems to be a "me feiner".

Better for him to be decisive. I think it was an honest and helpful statement.

As golf fans we should just appreciate the fact that we get to see him play.

i think some people are forgetting too that he is still just a kid and it cant be easy with the world hanging on his every word. its unfortunate that because he has expressed his leaning towards GB, there is suddenly an unearthing of people who find him arrogant etc

on a broader scale - the downside of all of this is what are the implications for GUI. This of course is not and should not be Rory McIlroys problem.

We live on a complicated Island and its always going to be that way!

I don't think any of us not from northern Ireland are entitled to comment on it. Unless you were born and lived there you don't know how a person feels or how they consider themselves

he is honestly expected to consider what some irish/american person thinks before making his decision to declare his honest intentions?

This is a weird reason to dislike someone and shows a very narrow minded view of the subject at hand.

Actually im out of this thread its gonna go nowhere fast.

Then I don't feel any of the rest of us should either. Nobody knows how another person feels or what they believe in

The way he carries himself....plus his interaction with thefans is not great. Friend of mine went with his young son to the Irish open a few years ago, enjoyed the golf and hung around for the usual autographs. Everyone he approached was fantastic, bar Rory, who proceeded to saunter past the boy without even a nod in his direction to acknowledge his support, let alone get his autograph. Not the nicest thing to do.

Is he not going to be making his living there for the next number of years? what if that section of the American society feel somewhat aggrieved that he chose britain over Ireland?
You seem to forget the fact that he is incredibly popular with the Irish community in the states. The Olympic "situation" may change his image somewhat.
I dislike him since he began appearing on our tv's a few years ago. I find him self important and arrogant. He is an amazing golfer though but I won't be shouting for him.
