The RTE/TV3/TG4 analogue terrestrial (i.e. through an aerial) TV signal is being switched off on 24th October. The replacement digital TV service, Saorview is already on the air and has been for some time now. So Irish TV through an aerial carries on.

You have a FTA digital satellite receiver that currently gets presumably the UK main channels. These aren't being switched off. You say you don't watch Irish TV anyway.

The box will continue to work. You will lose RTE1, RTE2, TV3 and TG4 Irish channels only.

If you are paying for UPC no channels will change during switchover, even if you do not have a UPC digital box.

However there are NO free UPC channels. They are either part of a Subscription (and not encrypted) or you are stealing a service.

    Satellite: No encryption = free
Cable/MMDS: No encryption, just a UPC cost saving, not free. Only legal to watch if you are paying UPC for a service that includes them.
Aerial: No encryption = free. Currently there are no pay DTT services in Ireland. Other countries have them. While technically MMDS is using an "aerial" under Irish Law it's a "Wireless" Cable TV service and thus reception of it without an appropriate UPC contract is theft of service.

Hi thanks for your reply, just to clarify the UPC thing. Many years ago when non Irish channels became available in this area a company call Cork Multi Channel ran cables along the fronts of houses to get the signal to the households. All went well until people discovered the company and the service was crap. As people moved away from the company Multi Channel started to disconnect the service leaving people with no TV signal as people had done away with the TV aerials. Multi channel went to court and lost the case with the judge ruling that Multi channel would have to maintain the signal for the Irish channels as compensation for running the cables across the houses. Multichannel has seen many name changes and takeovers down the years but the court ruling still stands. Hope this clears up the stealing the signal thing.

UPC have no plans to change anything on October 24th this year.

My slight concern was that you may be getting digital Saorview channels by accident, or else you might be getting analogue channels off air (not via UPC's network)

If the picture says "X October 24th" then you are in trouble. It means you are picking up broadcast signals by accident via the cable system. These signals will go on October 24th.

I'd never heard of this case (although I'd love a citation if for it if the OP has one) but I do know that on the Cork Communications cable network, where you needed an STB even in analogue days, the four terrestrials were provided unencrypted and remained on air after DSO back in 2008. Anyway its off topic for this forum. OP please don't increase the text size its basically shouting. What Watty says holds true for practically all other cable systems in this country.

I think the question's been answered at this stage and to be honest any other discussion is OT for this forum.
