    Hey,

I have signed up for a 3 months personal trainier for 3 months to build muscle and lose my average-sized beer gut. I have been vegetarian for nearly 2 years now. I have just bought Whey protein and will take that twice a day.

Can anyone tell me a good vegetarian diet for building muscle? I don't eat fish.

    Any suggests are welcome.

    Walrus

Do you eat eggs or cottage cheese? Both good options. The cottage cheese can be a little bitter but you get used to it and if it's really a problem you can add some honey to it.

What does cottage cheese offer in goodness?

It's got a high amount of protein, which can be difficult to get if your a vegetarian.

just horse in lots of whey protein.

    Few nuts and eggs too.

1g per lb and youll be fine,

Veggy yourself to pieces after that.

PS - maybe take some vitamin B supplements.

You could also try Tesco meat free mince, add it into your meals, like pasta etc. It's soya protein in origin. I find it good for bulking out meals, e.g. less pasta, more protein.

    Per 100g: 20g protein, 8g fat (0.6 sats), 7g fibre. Tastes alright.

Also, creatine is not present in a vegetarian diet, but can be supplemented.

Yes, loads of it but I'm told by my personal trainer that it's very fattening and to stay away from dairy products.

If you have a personal trainer couldn't he/she give you a diet to follow.

Being a veggie makes it a good bit harder to get the extra protein into your diet. Milk, whey, egg whites, soy protein, tofu etc? Do a search, i think there was a similar thread not that long ago.

Would taking a 3 month sabatical from being a veggie and consuming absurd amounts of fish make a difference?

Try lots of nuts, lentils, seeds, beans of all sorts.

Plus there's some great veggie products in the Linda McCartney range including a really great burger (with mozarella), and italian herb sausies

Quinoa is a great sources of protein (Tesco sells it)

    Also google the veggie websites

    Good luck!

For vegan lifestyle you can have many things that are better than non-veg foods. Your protein requirements should be 8gm into your body's weight. For protein supplements you can have Wheat Gluten (Seitan), tofu,Cooked Soybeans,Protein ,Cooked Lentils, Peanut Butter.

I've decided to start eating fish, for the 3 months anyway. I simply don't have the culinary skills to incorporate protein-based foods like beans and lentils. I tried but failed. I'm happy with my decision.

Really the trainer your paying should tell you all this stuff! My experience is that anything you doby yourself the trainer will tell you is wrong....then a few weeks later when they say it it's fine again.

Fattening is meaningless. People trying to lose weight might want to avoid it to easily cut sone calories. But you want gains so need protein and calories. This is very basic stuff. Honestly I'd look at getting a new personal trainer.

On a veggie diet, you are eliminating lots of easy protein calorie sources. So it's best to make the most of the ones you accept, like dairy.
Eats lots of milk, peanut butter, cottage cheese. Beans and legumes. I'd soy and meat replacement foods are ok, but don't rely on them for a main protein supply.

    I agree to this.

If you are vegetarian then you have to have maximum amount of calories and protein to gain energy for weight lifting. You should increase the intake of legumes, nuts, whole grains and dairy products in your diet.
