    http://www.independent.ie/business/irish/minister-is-given-aib-loan-despite-his-credit-issues-3223665.html
Small Business Minister and Sligo Fine Gael TD John Perry was given a mortgage by State-owned AIB in June despite issues over his credit history. The minister is understood to have loans of up to €5m from a variety of banks related to mortgages on properties around his hometown of Ballymote in Sligo.

    ...

"It'd stop most people getting finance. If you miss even one repayment on term loans, it'd be a block on a mortgage," Irish Mortgage Adviser Federation's Michael Dowling said.

"It would require someone at a very senior level in the bank to sign off on a matter like this," he added.

Makes you wonder how exactly he got a mortgage while he is being sued for money and has current judgments against him.

FG=FF. There's no difference, FG are worse if anything. There is no hope for this country because we let these people away with the likes of this.

My grandmother's family are long term residents of Ballymote so I've heard of Perry before. Prior to this, he made a name for himself over the following little gem:

"It'd stop most people getting finance...."

Before everyone gets up in arms about it. He is not most people, he is a minister in the Dail. He has decent job security considering the times we are in, and he will have a healthy pension after it. We also don't know what other assets he has. Lets not burn him at the stake just yet.

Also the article is from the Independent which is about 3 steps away from becoming a red top.

    Here we go:
Mr Perry is one of the most prominent players in his political stronghold of Ballymote. The poll-topper owns a hotel, supermarket, a hardware store, a funeral home and an apartment in Ballymote. The 2011 Oireachtas register of members' interests notes that he also owns 34 acres of woodland in Clooncoose, six acres of woodland in Ballymote, 16 acres of agricultural land and 10 acres of land complete with a derelict house in the area.

    In the following paragraph:
Banks have all but cut off credit to home buyers and small business, with mortgage lending this year likely to be the lowest in 40 years. Isme, the small business lobby group, reported 54 per cent of respondents to a survey had finance or loan requests turned down by banks.

I think Mr Perry, owning a hotel, a supermarket, a hardware store, a funeral home, an apartment, 40 acres of woodland, 16 acres of agricultural land and 10 acres of other land can be considered neither a home buyer nor a small business. Mis-leading language from the Independent(surprise, surprise)

The bloke owes €5M. I owe SFA in my business, and can't get a loan of 25G's - why should he be shown preferential 'treatment'? 1 rule for the asholes in DE, another for the bloke on the street trying to survive.

Another 'potential' Mr. S. Quinn in the making?????

He also has multiple judgements against him currently and is being sued for 1.3 MILLION as well. I wouldn't think a person in that position no matter what other assets they may or may not have should be getting a loan from a bank that is owned by the government, especially since if he defaults we the tax payers are going to be picking up the bill.

Well, when Garret Fitzgerald, that supposed paragon of virtue and integrity, could get his mortgage wiped clean by AIB, nothing would surprise me.

After all, if you were in AIB, you too would not want to alienate the parasites known as politicians who determine the future of your very bank. That's "smart".

"Former Taoiseach Garret Fitzgerald has confirmed that AIB and Ansbacher wrote off debts of almost £200,000 that he owed them six years ago. He was in financial difficulties at the time because of the collapse of the aircraft leasing company, GPA, in which he was a shareholder. Dr Fitzgerald was quoted in today’s Examiner newspaper as pointing out that the write off occurred after he had left politics. He insisted that no favours were asked or given."

Story here: AIB and Ansbacher wrote off Fitzgerald's £200,000 debt

And when it comes to string-pulling self-serving cronyism, the difference between FF and FG is what, exactly? It seems many people here were under the impression before the last election that Fine Gael would be morally superior when it came to the interaction between its politicians and corporations. How naive, once again.

Two years later and he is deeper in debt. Good thing they removed him from the Minister position, but too bad he is still allowed to keep his job in government.

Things should get interesting now but what stops him from retiring and leaving off a hefty pension

Ad for Lidl at the bottom of the page linked might come in handy for him.
