Medium dilemma... Help!

So I'm making this picture, it's art deco, it's on canvas and I want it to look like stained glass. I've drawn it out but now I don't know what to paint it with. I don't want to use acrylic or oil because they have the wrong consistency. In the beginning I was hoping to paint the whole thing with nail polish becuase it has a lovely shiny finish and it's not very streaky, but it turns out to be quite costly and I don't know how it would hold up in the long haul.

Does anyone know what I'm on about and what product would you suggest (and where to get it)??

    Please help!

Perhaps you should look at what glazes would work - they have them in most art supplies shops. W&N do a glazing medium, which might work - if you give a look on the corkartsupplies website they have a few there!

Well, just as a matter of interest, how would nail polish hold up on canvas with direct sunlight? Would it last like an oil painting would or would it crack or come away from the canvas?

If anyone has any ideas or experience with this please post something for me! :)

I'm not sure how practical it would be, but could you use glass paint?

A layer or two of clear underneath the colour might give it a bit of depth too.

Do you know how glass paint would hold up on canvas after a while?

I have no idea whatsoever to be honest. From what I remember it dries to a rubbery / plasticy texture, so I'd imagine it would stretch rather than crack. The link I found shows some of the paint on a tray which looks like wicker / wood - so it should be usable on things other than glass. I've never tried though, so I'm guessing completely.
