Freshers week is coming up soon, and there doesn't seem to be a thread for this yet, so I guess I'll start one. Let's hear about your club or society and why everyone should join it.

I'm with the Judo Club. Come train with us and we'll teach you how to hit people with the planet. It's a good workout, it's very hands on, and while it's not fancy it's the kind of stuff that will increase your chances of going home safe if some agro bastard grabs you and tries to take you down.

Hey, I’m on committee for the Computer Science Society (DUCSS).

We’re Trinity’s society for Computer Science (Duh), computing and gaming (the computer variety).

We hold regular events, usually at least one per week, that cover a wide range of topics and interests. Some of our most successful events have included tutorials focusing on game design & programming, film nights, and games tournaments (sometimes for wonderful and exciting prizes, if interest is high). We’re also more than regular patrons of pubs in the Townsend St. area.....

Outside of gaming, we hold regular talks from notable figures in the industry, such as representatives from Havok, DemonWare, Microsoft and Google.

We also provide our members with access to our servers and from there, the intersocs IRC network, which is a chat network of various Computer Science and Internet Societies in Irish universities. (Including DCU’s Redbrick and TCD’s Netsoc)

With such a wide member-base to draw from, we also have regular tutorials about everything from first year programming skills to more obscure topics, as well as a series of general tutorials on computing that anyone can benefit from such as our popular Photoshop tutorial.

We have a great room in the Hamilton building. Inside, we’ve a couple of couches, a bank of very nice PCs and a large TV connected to our trusty PS3. Courtesy of Microsoft, this year we’re adding a 360 and Kinect to our array of electronics. You can find us if you head in the ground floor of the Hamilton, in through the door just to the right of the vending machines and up the stairs. There’s always plenty of people hanging around!

Don’t think that just because you aren’t studying Computer Science (or a related course) that DUCSS isn’t for you! While a lot of our members are CS students, we tend to try and focus on events that are catered towards anyone with a general interest in technology or computing, or even just video games. Since our members come from many different courses, you will find almost all our events are inclusive regardless of technical skill - and of course anyone who is interested in learning more about computing outside of a formal course will benefit from joining, as we have some very talented people here in DUCSS who are glad to answer your questions, regardless of how tricky they are!

In the first week or two we'll have our Freshers reception, a tutorial by our system adminstrator on how to use our services/Linux and a talk by Sean Blanchfield, co-founder of DemonWare and former CTO of DemonWare and Jolt Online Gaming.

If you’re looking to join up or more information you can find us during Freshers Week (where we'll have some particularly awesome swag to give away!), email us at ducss@csc.tcd.ie or go to ducss.ie. (or give me a shout on here).

(can we talk in this thread?)
Do you know much about the boxing club? Have you any idea if training would overlap with judo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭Doug Cartel

The pads/sparring sessions for boxing on Monday clash with judo. I don't know how familiar you are with the boxing club, but they have their training split in two sections, a fitness session in the ancillary hall, followed by a pads/sparring session in the boxing gym. The fitness session is really big, with maybe 80 people training, but only a few of those continuing on to the boxing gym.

As far as I know though, Mondays is ladies night in boxing, so if you're a guy it mightn't be so big a deal to miss that session. You could do the Monday night fitness session and still come to judo training (which is on right after it in the same hall). You probably wouldn't be the only person doing that.

How much are the societies to join in general and once I'm a member, are most of the events free (ish) ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭Doug Cartel

Membership fees depend on the club/society, but I would guess the range form about 1-5 euros. Some of them you only pay a one off membership fee which lasts several years.

Cost of events is going to vary greatly depending on the event.

The events all vary but if you're considering taking up a sport, they're generally not all that expensive because some (all?) of them are subsidised by the sports centre. Eg. I was paying €2 an hour for Taekwon-do training last year.

It all depends - if it's just a "tea and chat" style event, it'll be free, if it's an overnight trip, it'll be costly. If you join a few societies, you'll have no problem finding cheap/free events most weeks though :) Comedy Soc put on comedians for €2 - €7 ish and I'm pretty sure most of the debates are free (if you turn up early enough, the chamber's small enough).

DU Photography Association is the place to go for anyone with any kind of interest in photography. We have a great year lined up already! Loads of guests coming in to give talks and masterclasses on different types of photography along with trips, classes, outings, exhibitions and other events. We also have a new website for this year (duphotos.net) where we will be posting up tips, ideas, tutorials and featured student photographers over the year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 111 ✭✭Darksider

Once you join boxing/judo, how much does a training session cost, or is it free?

Also for boxing, are the fitness/combat sections both on the one day or do they have them split up on separate days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭Doug Cartel

We don't charge per session in judo. I'm not actually sure about boxing, but I don't think they do either.

I'm pretty sure boxing is fitness followed by padwork/sparring Monday, Wednesday, Friday.

    Hello All,
I'm with the Aikido society! Aikido is a martial art, its emphasis is on using your opponent's energy to unbalance them and to throw them away from you. You learn how to use your own energy and strength and how to roll away unharmed:) It is also quite a beautiful martial art in that there is a lot of focus on movement and rhythm.

We train pretty hard but the teachers are excellent, gentle but firm. We are a very nice bunch of people and complete beginners are welcomed! We have a few trips during the year, weekends away to Galway etc which are great fun.

We'll have a stand on freshers week so come on over if you're interested (I'll be there on Monday) Membership costs 2 euro and for each training session it is preferable if you pay 2 euro to help fund the class trips away and other aikido-related activities.

The website is here http://www.aikido.tcdlife.ie/index.html if you'd like more information, and also, feel free to PM me and I'll try to answer any questions:)

I would advise anyone simply looking for self-defense techniques not to take up aikido and to do something else like self-defense classes or possibly judo. Again, if people are genuinely interested in Aikido please have a look at the website or come along for a training session.

Not entirely in our realm of expertise from an event point of view, but there are plenty of people who know Excel pretty well from working enterprise IT summer jobs.

Just gonna make a quick post about the new DU Germanic Society. We plan on running a number of German themed cultural events, film showings etc. throughout the year, and since we are only starting up this year we need all the support we can get, so if you're interested please do join during freshers week!

Just a post to mention DU Rifle Club.

As one of only two Irish universities which currently offer shooting, and the one that provides the most varied opportunities, DU Rifle Club is the perfect way to try and experience one of the more niche sports on this island, though it's extremely popular in much of the world.

Our focus is on Olympic rifle shooting, specifically 10m air rifle for men and women and 50m prone and three-positions rifle for men and women. All coaching and equipment is free to use and the only ongoing expense will be ammunition, which you pay for as you use and is a very small cost.

This is far and away the best and easiest way to try shooting in Ireland, as well as the cheapest, by hundreds is not thousands of euro, depending on the type of shooting in question. For €4, you have access to the combined coaching experience of the whole club and external coaches, our on-campus facilities and high quality equipment. You could do worse than give it a go, even for the sake of satisfying curiosity. We have members of all levels from rank novice to Irish internationals and national champions, so come and talk to us from monday on.

In the meantime, check out our website.

Unfortunately they'll all be down by then! Usually half 3 - 4ish I think.

They'll be up each day this week.

Trinity Hiking organises hikes every Sunday to the Wicklow mountains, as well as trips further afield such as the Mourne Mountains and Kerry. (come on the weekend trips, you won't regret it!)

It's a great way to meet people as well as get out into the beautiful hills we're lucky to have so close to the city. Social events are also run throughout the year for members. All ablities welcome, but we're always looking for people to get involved and learn/apply mountaineering skills.

Last year (and possibly the year before, can't remember) they set up some stands again in Week 4 because someone designated "Fourth Week" as Clubs & Socs Week. No idea why, but if they do that again, you'll have another chance to go sign up. If not, email or ask on Facebook to join any ones you want to join and they'll probably have no problem sorting you out :)

It Wasn't Me already mentioned this but there are some pictures here to give you a better idea of what we do. DU Rifle Club is an Olympic target shooting club. We have a range on campus where we shoot 10m air rifle and 25 yard smallbore. All the equipment you need is provided and all the shooting takes place in a very safe environment with expert coaching. To become a member costs just €4. We are one of the most active clubs in Trinity with the range being open Mon-Fri, 6-10pm, you simply put your name down for the time you would like at our sign up sheet in front arch. There is also a lounge in the range where tea and biscuits are provided which makes us quite a social club as well. There are many competitions every year including some international ones.
