    Hi all,

I have a car that hasnt been driven for a bout a month and now wont start.
Can anyone give me some diy stuff to check before i embarass myself and call a garage.

Battery isnt dead, when i try to start it it just wont turn over.

    Do I jump starting?
    Any pointers welcome.

Try giving a push start. Starter might be stuck.

    What type of car?
    Is it turning over?
If its turning over slowly(might just be a little slower than normal) or just clicking, then try jump leads.

If that doesnt work try a bump start.

Or if you have a friend who is in the aa their policy might cover them to get your car started (policy covers the driver, not the car)

well if it wont turn over chances are the battery is dead

happened to me today, hadnt driven the car in 2 weeks, battery is new about 3 months old. I turned the key today and the lights came on after a couple of seconds on the dashboard after just the battery light coming on initially.

Used a battery pack leads from matlan and it didnt work as I hadnt charged it up enough

will try tomorrow, would have thought 2 weeks not driving would not have run a new battery flat?

it would have if you forgot to turn off an interior light or something. a quick jump and a quick run will be more than enough to charge it back up.

Lent my 2002 Octavia to my younger brother as he started a new job and the night before he went to the shop and left the lights/radio and internal illumination/dashes all lit up like a christmas tree on for 3-4h, car is as dead as week old fish.

Even a push start did nothing, electrical heavy cars are a pain in the arse

also check the connection to the battery poles,it may look tight but sometimes corrosion can build up around it and it can cause the car not to start.

Most likely the battery is partially discharged to the point where it still operates the dash lights, but has not enough charge to crank the engine. A jump start should work. The best way if you are not in a rush is to connect the jump leads up, and leave them connected for 20 mins with the engine running in the other car. This will charge the flat battery enough to start your car.
