Hi Trigger. New to this and looking for answers to some basic questions if you can.
What age would a novice dog normally be?
Would they be expected to retreive blinds as a matter of course?
What distance would a typical retreive be?
    Can anyone enter a dog?
Are novice competitions ran fairly often around the country?

I have a 15 month old black lab I trained myself, delighted with him so far, but have nothing to comapre him to, so I may be delusional!
Any info would be greatly appreciated
    Cheers

I think you should make the trip up and see for your self if possible . You can enter your dog at nine months from what I know .

Retrives can be any distance normally depend on where the bird land along with the judge . We run two novice and three open stakes between now and January .

One been a derby for dogs under 2 which qualifies you for the championship .

Blind retrives would be common along with lining your dog up with the other while shooting is taken place to see how steady your dog is . If it breaks from the line your out .

I'm only getting into the trailing side of it this year so I don't have all the ans on rules I'm still picking them up .

Mayb working test is a gud place to start . Held all summer on dummies .

And check with ikc for info on all trials in the country .

Where you from our of interest

Thanks for the info. I'm in Limerick area but will be working w/end of 16th. Have the dog doing left/right/back. Will stop and return on the whistle. He delivers to hand and is steady to shot. Have a problem with blinds alright in that when I cast him off he will begin to wander instead of staying on the line I cast him. So I'm trying to fix it by doing blinds in boreens etc where he can't veer left or right.
He's the first dog I've tried to train and really enjoy it, though I made a good few boo boos along the way. This will be his and my first season hunting so hopefully good days ahead

if the dog has a memory walk him up to a focal point maybe a stick with a flag, with the dog on lead drop 3-4 dummies and turn and walk the dog back then cast him "BACK!!" if he has a memory he should run to them .then when he is hitting them .try without showing the dummy but have dummy there before taking dog out, the best dogs dont run straight lines .i was at a trial last week when the field was rushy with spots of cover ,the dog was cast but weaved in and out till he made his way back 100 yards or so.striaght lines arent everything once the dog gets into the intended area
